I think Xi Jinping and much of China's leadership became arrogant and also complacent, assuming the US depended on China, valued the business relationship too much, that US corporations will forever steer US policy and they overreached. They overreached in the South China Sea, they overreached in announcing their ambitions even though China was still far behind in many extremely important core technologies like semiconductors, precision manufacturing, engine technology, AI, etc etc. But they never expected a wild card like Trump who disrupted everything. That's why they are trying to downplay everything now and trying to backtrack, but it's too late, they showed their cards too early. If they were smarter, they would've shown their cards after they actually equaled or surpassed the US.

You are falling for Trump's stupid rhetorics. Many developing nations in the world like India and Thailand have this policy of "forced" technology transfer to catch up with the developing world and to protect its weaker domestic companies. This is why the EU and most countries in the world readily accept China's policy. Also, this policy is not solely aimed at the US. It is aimed at all companies that want to do business in China. But Trump is such a great manipulator that Americans are thinking China is just out to "steal" their technologies. The media and elites are helping these rhetorics too because they want that Chinese market BAD.

China is not the USA. The USA may have the skills and resources but it is isolated and far away. China is at the center of global trade and has the world's supply chain. If you know anything about business, you'd understand that logistics is one of the most important factors to keep the price down and timely delivery to customers. China also has the skills to manufacture high-quality products, which countries like Vietnam and India would have a very hard time to catch up. Basically means China has a very good quality to cost ratio and also means it's good for business.

its not like manufacturing is shifted all at once its in phases a factory is build in vietnam or indoneshia in phases and same time closed in phases in erstwhile manufacturing hub, same thing happened in west when manufacturing started shifting to china in early 80s.
Everything can be replaced in this ever changing world.

No one except those delusional vietnamese think factories are actually going to move out of China... vn's manufacturing capability is negligible (less than 1% of China's)... this won't happen in less than a decade or more. And by then, our industry will be upgraded and vn remains a cheap sweat shop forever...
