  • Warning: This report contains images that some may find distressing
The refugee crisis engulfing Europe has a shocking new face after photographs emerged of a young Syrian boy lying face-down on a beach in Turkey.

The boy was one of at least 12 Syrians who drowned trying to make it to the Greek island of Kos.

One of the photographs shows the boy, wearing a red t-shirt and shorts, lying face-down on the shore with his hands by his side.
Another shows a rescue worked carrying his lifeless body to land.

Turkish gendarmerie stand near by the washed up body of a refugee child who drowned during a failed attempt to sail to the Greek island of Kos, at the shore in the coastal town of Bodrum, Mugla city, Turkey, 02 September 2015.

The images have been widely circulated online, with many tweeting the hashtag #KiyiyaVuranInsanlik (humanity washed ashore).

The boy has been identified in Turkish media as three-year-old Aylan Kurdi.

It has been reported that his five-year-old brother also died.

I thought that I was immune to seeing all kind of violence/insane stuff by now after following various conflicts since a young age but pictures of innocent children like that always sends a chill down my spine. If you have nephews that age you can't stop thinking about them in such a situation.

Very sad.

It took 60 million European casualties between WW1 and WW2 before Europe woke up and stopped killing each other over silly political differences (excluding the Balkan war 20 years ago and now East Ukraine). Although the conflicts in the Arab world are not even 5% as bad (in terms of casualties) in recent decades/years it's still unnecessary and not much needed in this time and era where the world should have better things to do than killing each other.

I pray and hope that ancient and beautiful countries such as Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Libya will soon see peace including its people.

Nearby states are hosting millions of refugees already (from those countries but also Sub-Saharan Africa and other conflict zones) and they already have their struggles to look after.

The world is in need of strong leadership and real actions. Sadly we don't see much of that in the MNEA region or dare I say the world as a whole. We prefer to look the other way but one day we might be at the receiving end like almost every nation/civilization/people has been at one point.

Hypocritical of Turks to tweet "flotsam of humanity" as it's mostly Turkish taxpayer monies that contributed to policies that created conditions in Syria that forced the child to go on his final journey
