Donors’ conference pledges 2.7 bn to help stabilise Pakistan

TOKYO: The United States pledged one billion dollars to help stabilise Pakistan on Friday, at the start of a donors’ conference that the World Bank hopes will raise up to six billion dollars. Saudi Arabia also pledged up to 700 million dollars for Pakistan.

Almost 30 countries met in Tokyo to pledge aid for Pakistan, which shares a long border with Afghanistan and is seen by US President Barack Obama as being at the forefront of the battle against Al-Qaeda and Taliban.

President Asif Ali Zardari said at the opening of the conference that "we are ready to fight" extremism, even though "there is a bomb blast every third day" in his country.

"In spite of the fact that I lost the mother of my children, I have taken up this challenge," President Zardari said.

"It does not end on my border. If we lose, you lose. If we are losers, the world is a loser."

Japan's Prime Minister Taro Aso, who on Thursday pledged up to one billion dollars for Pakistan, said that "seven and a half years have passed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the world is still facing the threat of terrorism.

"Even now, tragedies are being repeated in Islamabad, Lahore, Mumbai and Kabul. Terrorism is posing a threat to the international community, and we cannot help but acknowledge that efforts to eradicate terrorism are now at a crucial stage."

"Pakistan has played a vitally important role in efforts of the international community to counter terrorism and extremism," he said.

The United States also pledged one billion dollars over two years.

US regional envoy Richard Holbrooke "announced the United States' intent to provide support, totaling one billion dollars over a two-year period" in the closed-door meeting, said State Department acting spokesman Robert Wood.

Holbrooke called it "a down payment on President Obama's commitment" to support a bill to pump 1.5 billion dollars a year into Pakistan for at least five years to build schools and infrastructure that can nurture democracy.

The World Bank has said it expects total loan and grant aid pledges of four billion to six billion dollars from the 27 countries and 16 organisations attending the one-day conference and a "Friends of Pakistan" meeting.

Will this fills the pockets of Mr Zardari?

International donors have pledged more than $5bn (£3bn) to help stabilise Pakistan, at an aid conference co-hosted by Japan and the World Bank.

Nearly 30 countries and international organisations met in Tokyo to offer financial support to enable Pakistan to fight off Islamic extremism.

The United States and Japan each pledged $1bn (£671m).

In return, President Asif Ali Zardari said Pakistan would do its utmost to defeat militants in its border areas.(i thought this money was for economic help but instead its going to war on poor and feed the rich and corrupt)

Pakistan's stability is being threatened by al-Qaeda and Taleban forces in the lawless northwestern areas neighbouring Afghanistan.

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari promised to use the money to "fight this tremendous challenge".

He also warned those attending the Tokyo conference that the threat of terrorism did not "end on my border".

"If we lose, you lose. If we lose, the world loses," he said.(Meaning you better get ready to pay more as my government is willing to milk this for as long as i can)

Down-payments

The US pledge of $1bn was described as a down-payment on the previously announced $1.5bn already promised to Pakistan for each of the next five years. (This is to rent politicians)

The European Union promised $640m over four years, while reports said Saudi Arabia had pledged $700m over two years.

Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso said that ensuring stability in Pakistan was key in the fight against terrorism in the southwest Asia region - and to the peace and stability of the international community. (japan paid the money so pakistan will not invest in its own auto industry or wont allow any competetion for its Monopoly)

Separately, a $7.6 billion bailout has been granted by the International Monetary Fund to avert the country's most recent balance-of-payments crisis.(Your debt just went up and its going to choke all of us long after these politicians and military officers have left the country with there stolen money and there families)

But Pakistan has resisted international pressure to tax the small landowning elite where most political power resides.(simply they are saying we are here to steal no help it grow)

Economic growth is expected to slow to between 2.5% and 3.5% for the year to June 2009, a rate considered too slow to find jobs for Pakistan's population of 170m.

(i hope u enjoyed my politcial honesty and for donations of billion and over i can be contacted at ( WE are all crooks and beggers @screw pakistan.com):cheesy:

What a shameful day for Pakistan, what else we could expect from Mr. 10%, the irony is that how proud he is in begging the world for donations. If he is that patriotic why cant he just start bringing the money back which he looted from Pakistan.

Musharraf gave us a motto Pakistan first, but this basturd has changed it to " KASHKOL FIRST". What a shame.

We should avoid calling him with abusive words as no matter how corrupt he is, still is the president of Pakistan and most importantly Indians on this forum then take it for granted to bash Pakistan's leaders.
Anyways 5 billion is a hell of a amount, if this would have happened in Musharraf's era, i would have been more satisfied as compared to now keeping Zardari's track record in mind.

Holbrooke called ours a down payment on the aid bill so it won't likely come without caveats and conditions.

Thank goodness.
