HONG KONG — Thousands in Hong Kong have protested against alleged meddling by Beijing in the recent selection of the city's next leader.

Police used pepper spray Sunday on some protesters who tried to break past barricades around the Chinese central government's liaison office in the semiautonomous region. Police estimated about 5,300 people took part in the march. They chanted pro-democracy slogans and burned a Hong Kong flag.

It was the first major demonstration since Leung Chun-ying was chosen a week ago to be Hong Kong's next chief executive. He won 689 of 1,132 votes cast by a 1,200-seat committee packed with Beijing loyalists.

Rally organizers accused Beijing of interfering with the poll despite promising the former British colony a high degree of autonomy.

It is quite disturbing to witness Hong Kongese gradually losing their political freedom under the Chinese rule.

We are talking about a once-free people becoming unfree overtime in the modern age.

But I have seen many people of HK in PDF they seem to be quite patriotic

Anyone who expected the reverse to happen when HK joined China, was living in fool's paradise.

5000 protestors in a city of 8 million.

less than 0.001% of the population.

under a government which requires you to submit your id and details just so your could post on the Chinese version of Twitter (Sina Weibo), even 5000 is not a small number.

...and 5000 is what the media is being allowed to report. God knows how many were actually there.

I have attended several protests and strikes.....and i can assure you that 5000 is no small number.

Fact that 5000 protesters did turn up in a small pool of 8 million......and that in a repressive commie regime.... in itself is amazing. Of-course, you wouldn't know that in communist china. I wish the very best to all those protesting hong kongers....maybe with greater autonomy, our in house chinese-'ding-bat'-dragon would be free to make more "autonomous" observations.

So what they were thinking when they decided to join back the PRC? Yes, there was the whole lease thing, but AFAIK Hong Kongese joined without even a whimper of protest.

So according you ,how much % of the population should the protestors be so that they can be considered 'serious'.
