The Man who understands the subcontinent the best

Ideologically I am probably closest to this guy...This is not a thread to diss Pakistan, things are worse in India...The man liberally disses Modi too in the video (and rightly so)

Unless and until European style Enlightenment happens in the subcontinent, things will remain like this...no matter how many billions are spent on education with the best of intent

a commercial jetliner shootdown cheerleader?

no wonder you are a RSS Nazi

I think this perfectly sumps up the historical situation till present times...Thank you for this....My counter question would be, why did it turn out this way? Why was the West predominantly interested in inner workings and the East in meaning? culture, climate, genetics, geography, history, pure chance and randomness?
In a word, religion.
Religious people already presume to know the workings (God creates, operates and controls everything through his will) so the only thing left to consider is the why and the meaning of it all.
It's no coincidence that in the West, as science has progressed, religion has receded.
I think that is the thrust of Hoodbhoy's arguments. That religious people tend to self restrict and self censor their thought if they feel that what they are learning or discovering in science is in danger of contradicting the teachings of their particular religion, fearing loss of faith and punishment in the hereafter.

That is true, when looking at it from a religious/non-religious angle.

However, I would like to offer another opinion:

Scientific advancements and the rational thought process is also dependent on a tolerant society. Tolerance in society comes from absence of fear. Absence of fear comes from power. Ergo, most advancements in science and rational thought were made in powerful societies, whether it was the Romans or the Ottomans or Abbasids or Western Europe and now the US.

For phhuck's sake. there was no meaningful science before the Scientific Revolution that happened in the 100 years between Galileo and Newton..you may drag it back to Copernicus but no more
