Cricket's IPL To Become the World's Greatest Sporting League
Lalit Modi the commissioner of the IPL looks on during the IPL T20 match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings at Newlands Cricket Ground on April 18, 2009 in Cape Town, South Africa.

IPL season three is set to begin tomorrow.

The one-and-a-half month of fête de cricket as I like to call it, is about to take us by a storm. The sport cricket is no longer the same as we knew some years ago.

Let's have a brief look about Lalit Modi’s ideas about the IPL for the future.

I admire the genius of Modi for the wonders he has done by creating IPL and where he has taken it for the past two years; this is just the beginning.

He wants IPL to be one of the world's largest sporting league matching the likes of EPL, NFL, and the NBA. Such a big dream for a league, which is just two or three-year-olds, to achieve what the EPL and NFL took about decades to achieve for it they are now.

IPL has surely transformed the way cricket has been played.

There are already foreign owners who have announced interest in buying IPL franchises. By having foreign owners, the IPL will automatically globalize just as what is happening to soccer in the US due to the American owners in the premier league.

The reason why they will buy IPL franchises is because the capacity of money IPL may generate in coming years.

In IPL season one, each franchisee got Rs 25 crore from IPL as its share of the central pool. Last season that was risen to Rs 67.50 crore each.

The BCCI profit also jumped to Rs 477 crore from Rs 350 in the season two compared to season one. This season, IPL has signed a new nine-year agreement with Multi Screen Media (MSM, formerly Sony) and World Sport Group (WSG), declaring the two as the Official Broadcast Partners of the Indian Premier League, up to 2017 which will reap greater profits to the franchisees.

The portion of TV revenues to be distributed among the teams is due to fall to 70 percent this year from 80 percent. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the owner of the IPL, will keep the rest and in 2011, it will be 60 percent.

So this means a lot of money for the BCCI already overflowing locker. This apart, franchises get an average earn about 16 crore through gate receipts, in-stadia advertising, merchandise sales, and media tie-ups. There is a lot to gain for any millionaire who set sights on the IPL.

Only recently, Manchester City owners have expressed in buying an IPL franchise. I won't be surprised if the Bollywood actors who own franchises sell them to foreign investors in the years to come.

Money is not the only aspect that makes this the best league in the world; there are a lot of others involved.

First, cricket is not popular other than the eight test playing nations. Among those India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are the only three countries which has cricket crazy audiences.

Australia, England, and South Africa have significant cricket fans but will those people watch IPL day in and day out, I reckon not. But the boost IPL has is that they have a vast number of Indian population spread around the world who would love to follow cricket no matter Indian team or IPL.

So the audiences are there but not as massive as the EPL and NBA have; we can't expect those thing now. It's not going to be an easy task for Lalit Modi to globalize IPL.

Lalit Modi has already signed deals with YouTube to stream all IPL games for free in every country except the US.

Modi also announced last week a deal with the UK network TV station ITV to air each of the six-week tournament's 60 matches for free. This means anybody in the world can watch IPL but this happens only if they are interested.

IPL expects about 150 million viewers a day for the coming 2010 season.

Stones are being laid for making IPL the biggest sporting league in the world.

Will this all work? Only time will tell.:yahoo:
