TAI Hürjet fighter to receive EJ-200 turbofan engines

The evolution of Hürjet is already in progress. Hurjet was a light jet trainer concept so the first dynamic performance figures was lower at the beggining of program. Later, It is considered to improve the thrust ratio and a new engine solution (F404) which has a power of 17000lbf selected. Changing politic climate effected the roadway so Turkey has rejected US engine and selected an unknown engine supplier (19200lbf). At present, TAI signed a deal with European powerplant supplier to integrate EJ-200 engine (20000lbf) for HurJet.

As It is told before, HurJet is being evolved into a real fighter platform thanks to new consideration and capability improvements.
EJ2000, congratulations, that engine is a beast , with all the FADEC and stuff , high sortie rates, I thought hurjet would be a light weight next gen trainer , but with such a powerful engine it has the potential to become a medium weight fighter akin to mig35 etc,

It has comparable engine thrust but what about it's speed?
Mirage 2000-5: 2,2 Mach
Gripen NG: 2 Mach
HürJet: 1,4 Mach

TAI expected that it will reach 1,4 Mach with the "19,200lb" engines.

I think Hürjet with 20000lbf engine will reach a speed around 1,6-1,7Mach in trials. It will be more than enough to provide effectiveness. Top speed is no longer a critical part of an aircraft performance. Older aircrafts were the one that has faster speed than new generation fighters of todays but max speed figure is not sustainable on missions cause of generating many serious problems such as overheating airframe, extreme fuel consumption, less maneuvrability...etc so A speed around 1,5-2 Mach is considered to be enough to fullfill the requirements. That’s the reason TF-X will have a speed around 1,8 Mach. Same for F35 and many modern aircraft programs will have relatively less top speed figures. Combat speed and supercruise capability is the one which make a fighter superior than competitors today.

Turkey's first jet aircraft project Hürjet passed another critical stage which is very important milestone.

Hürjet successfully completed Preliminary Design Review (PDR) stage. When an aircraft passes the PDR stage, it means that its design is convenient to fly.

The next stage will be the Critical Design Review (CDR) and Test Flight Preparation (TRR) stages, in which aircraft production will take shape.

Additional tunnel test for air intake will also take place soon because of the design is switched from GE404 to EJ200.

According to official schedule, 2020 planned as CDR , 2021 planned as TRR and finally 2022 planned as the first flight phase.

You can read more about Hürjet's progress in the 75th issue of the forthcoming C4Defence Magazine.
