Financial Benefit, yes, but not from the Government.
Used to be when things aren't really that rampant, the government hand out retirement benefit for which you can claim if you have a certain medal or reward. But now everything is put against your personnel file and your 214/215 (discharge file) when you go, it's hard to claim benefit anymore. But still from time to time you will hear someone claiming medal (hence benefit) they don't deserve.
Money would come in from other organisation, such as TV/Movie Production (when you are hired as a technical advisor), book deal (A lot of them sell their imaginary experience and write book about it), or charity organisation. But mostly it's pounce on people sympathy when you pretended to be a homeless vet or something like that.
Most of them saying stuff they don't have usually about pride and joy, a sense of belonging, there aren't many that go for money, but majority of these faker go for glory, having a chance to march with us and having a touch of that glory is what and why they are pretending
I also met a few such characters. I kinda felt they were fake but I had no way to find out. I serviced one such veteran's computer in exchange I got to hear some stories of his adventures in south America against a network of drug dealers and serial killers and a cup of coffee.
