Stolen Valor

Financial Benefit, yes, but not from the Government.

Used to be when things aren't really that rampant, the government hand out retirement benefit for which you can claim if you have a certain medal or reward. But now everything is put against your personnel file and your 214/215 (discharge file) when you go, it's hard to claim benefit anymore. But still from time to time you will hear someone claiming medal (hence benefit) they don't deserve.

Money would come in from other organisation, such as TV/Movie Production (when you are hired as a technical advisor), book deal (A lot of them sell their imaginary experience and write book about it), or charity organisation. But mostly it's pounce on people sympathy when you pretended to be a homeless vet or something like that.

Most of them saying stuff they don't have usually about pride and joy, a sense of belonging, there aren't many that go for money, but majority of these faker go for glory, having a chance to march with us and having a touch of that glory is what and why they are pretending

I also met a few such characters. I kinda felt they were fake but I had no way to find out. I serviced one such veteran's computer in exchange I got to hear some stories of his adventures in south America against a network of drug dealers and serial killers and a cup of coffee.

more than fakers, I dont understand how working for military gives you bragging right.. does not matter if you were cleaner or driver... suddenly you are to be respected.. by civilian...
the way I see, you entered the service knowing fully well what it entails, were monetarily compensated, thats the end of the deal with society in general. just like any other profession.

Nothing new about this , there have been on this very forum two in the last year that i remember one who claimed to be an ex major from the IA and another from BD Army ,these all end up as jokes.

Well, a lot of this type of people been around.

The thing is, usually when I hear these stories I will treat it with a grain of salt. They be true, they may be not, but for people who actually were in a fight, there are stories that you will tell people and it's funny and exciting, and there are stories you probably wouldn't want to relive....

But as a general rules, I wouldn't mind much when I see some old timer talking about their experience but when people go and march with people who serve and that's when I draw the line...

Do you guys get the same things with stolen valour in Pak? Here in Aus it happens every now and then, but Australia doesn't have as much of a culture where people look up to the military as Pakistan, India or the U.S so there is less incentive for them to do it.

These marines are way too sensitive. What if some of these imposters were mentally ill or actors?

A lot of the people who pretend to be service members are probably just looking for attention and respect.

There are teal life imposters too of IA.
Like this " Shifuji Shaurya Bharadwaj "guy who claims to train all the special forces of india .His fans thinks he is ex serviceman himself but the language he uses in his videos shows that he is nowhere near an officer.

depending on people and circle, Australian have a great sense of patriotism, many people born locally have some degree of respect to the Armed Force of Australia, even to military around the world (I was once invited to march with Aussie Vet from my RSL, even I served in the US Military), RSL, ANZAC day and Remembrance day saw people pay respect to the Servicemen.

But if you are an immigrant, you probably would not care less about them...

I personally have a lot of respect for Aussie veterans, but like you said it does depend on the circle.

well, I am not saying you don't respect Aussie vet, I am just illustrating a point where immigrant usually don't go that way for Aussie Vet. But majority of Aussie do have a military culture.

I don't think it happens in Pakistan but I'm surprised to learn that it happens in Australia also.

It does every now and then.... here is an example of it. This guy, who apparently had only done basic training gets called out by a Army reserve officer.
