South Korea to export aircraft parts to Pakistan

LAHORE: South Korea has reached a preliminary deal with Pakistan to export 1.3 million worth of parts from decommissioned military training aircraft, the Defense Ministry said.

The agreement between the Air Force officials of the two countries will allow S Korea to export engines and other parts of its T-37 training aircraft.

The contract will help enhance the ties between the Air Forces of the two sides, said Han Sung-joo, who oversees South Korea's military supplies.

Is Pakistan, after just being declared a "major non-nato ally" once again under sanctions and unable to import something as simple as a trashy 1950s vintage airplane engine?

correct but the K-8s delivery is slow! and i dont know the reasons for it.

We need a more advanced trainer in the league of Hawk, perhaps L-159 for FC-20 and other future platforms.
Thats the reason we haven't placed a follow up order after the first two batches of 20.

Its not just Pakistan, the main developer is China which is under a embargo from the US, the Garrett engines used in the K-8 are small high performance engines, the K-8 is also classified as a light bomber aircraft, which is also in other words a military plane able to bomb in the eyes of US therefore the US halted the engine sales to China, the US embargoed all military associated sales to China, the project has been halted, the Chinese than later tried to reproduce the Garrett engine without success. There is still some problem with the WS-11 replacement which is something that has brought the performance down.

IMO K-8 still has room left for improvement and if done accordingly it can serve the need for the future training of the pilots for the up coming platforms.

AFM did a cover story on this trainer and was very impressed by its capabilities. its COIN profile is much better than the K-8. does it have a russian or ukranian powerplant?. would be a good addition to the PAF fleet.

I though we had the capacity to assemble the K-8 at Kamra, in which case couldn't the issues with respect to China-US relations be resolved by importing the airframe and installing the engines and avionics at Kamra?

That is of course if Kamra isn't being reserved entirely for the Thunder production. If that is the case, any studies/proposals into expansion at Kamra, or a second facility?

We just placed an order for 20 more K-8s, 8 of them should be inducted by end of August.

it was not-cost effective so the plans were dropped in favour of the JF-17 project. any way the pak. govt gets a share of the export proceeds of the K-8 because of their 25% investment in the project.
