You will be surprised to know that English is our second language too and we use it here because that's this forum's requirement.
Have you heard of Hindi/Tamil/Punjabi/Gujarati/Marathi/Malayalam/Kannada/Telugu etc ? One of these is generally a first language of an Indian born in India.

I think its English.
And why you use it ?
Because either we all learn Chinese or you learn our language.
You are using a common language.
In India there are over 26 languages and many more dialects. Now imagine if I have to talk to a South Indian, either I or he should know each other's langauge or we can use English which is taught as common language platform for better administration and communication. We can't run language schools for 26 languages to talk all over India. We need single language for all official work.
Due to Britishers, all official work was done in English.
But as a matter of fact, in state official purposes, in my state, Hindi is used in alternate. So that it helps a Hindi person and English for other state person for better understanding.
