AMRITSAR: Following an appeal from Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of Sikhs, the community in Pakistan has also supported amendment of Section 25(B) of Indian Constitution and started "Sikhs are not Hindus" signature campaign at Nankana Sahib.

Two Sikh organizations in Nankana Sahib, birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev, Sikh Resource and Study Centre (SRSC) and Young Sikh Panthers have also started the online signature campaign.

Director of SRSC Gurmeet Singh told TOI over phone from Nankana Sahib on Thursday that though the amendment was to be made in the Indian Constitution, "being a Sikh I feel that we should support the cause for the distinct identity of Sikhs". He said his organization has also started the campaign on social networking sites.

Earlier, one lakh signatures have been obtained during the three-day camp held at Amritsar by All India Sikh Students Federation (Peermohammad) faction in support of the petition which was started ahead of US president Barrack Obama's scheduled visit to India on January 26.

President of recently constituted Young Sikh Panthers Dilawar Singh said they had begun the camp at Nankana Sahib and would also hold similar camps at various gurdwaras. "This is our contribution for the cause of Sikh identity". However, he said Sikhs and Hindus had always lived in perfect harmony but when Sikhs' identity was in danger then they had to begin the campaign.

On the issue of Nanakshahi Calendar (NC), both the organizations supported implementation of Canada-based Sikh intellectual Pal Singh Purewal-authored calendar. "We are following Akal Takht approved NC which was implemented in 2003 but we have rejected the amendments made in NC in 2010. These amendments were made under political pressure and not as per the aspirations of Sikhs," said the SRSC director.

Pakistani Sikhs aren't Hindus, while majority of Sikhs on other side of border consider themselves part of santan dharma or Hinduism, so Useless effort by Pakistani Sikhs

did any one said sikhs are hindus?? even in religious category there is a separate space for sikhs like other religion... and is this issue is a serious one to be published in news paper??

This Sikh petition is being signed in many countries around the world. Don't try to project it as something being supported only in Pakistan.

if you sign a petition that Mango tree is not banana tree, would that make any difference? BSo_O
These petitions hold no value. It is not human to decide what religion is.

Congress is behind this.

The basic agenda of petition is a conflict between Hindus and sikhs. Done by congress, these all committee members are congressi. Hindus believe in Om, Sikhs believe in ek Onkar!

Well Sikhs are not Hindus. How the hell they can become Hindus ?
But what is the role of a Pak organistaion
in Indian Constitutional affairs?

Amendment of Section 25(B) of Indian Constitution is a genuine demand of Sikhs. But there is no need of bringing other countries in this distinctive matter of India.

Looking to stoke fires that do not exist !!

Few days back, Akal Takht demanded removal of Article 25B from India's Constitution. I hope you know the importance of Akal Takht in Sikhism. Were they too, trying to stroke fire that doesn't exists? :coffee: One should accept that Article 25B is discriminatory and should be chucked out. This is what Sikhs in India asking for 60 odd years. :cuckoo:

All the seeds to stroke fire were sowed by Congress Party. One should blame Congress for that, not Pakistan.

Now its need a constitutional amendement .A Constitutional amendment where 2 /3 of Parliament should agree with that.
Sikhs deserves a special identity. But then again they dont have a support like that of Abrahamic religions gets from their 100+ nations.
