Should Pakistan convert Mi-17 to optional attack role?

PA has no need to do so, although not a bad idea but again PA has no need for it those birds are for transport only with light machine gun.
Why does India arm their helicopters then? Again, have you thought of on optional attack role, the helicopter could still perform transport duties and if needed switch over to an attacking role because who knows how many attack helis Pakistan will lose or need in a war with India.

Indian helicopter which is armed, care to explain why?

Also can't Pakistan convert foreign bought Mi-24s to Super Hind instead of buying new built from Russia?

Every army has the know about their own needs, PA is one of the top best armies in the world so I think they might know what they are doing. MI-35's are being bought for just that purpose again as of right now they have no need nor want to do the above as you state thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for starting an excellent thread---. The problem you are facing is that you are preaching to pakistanis who have a mentality of " father knows best "---.

So---it will be next to impossible to get thru---.

The reason pakistan is buying new is to start up a relationship with russia---but your idea is very good---.

Why not buy used and get them completely re-furbished---.

Your option for the MI17 is also excellent that needs some serious thought and consideration by the army---.

Military is first and foremost a fighting force---and parallel to fighting is transport element as well---.

Ah I see, well do you like the idea? Even the US armed their Blackhawks so I don't see why the Mi-17s can't be.

Old Mi-24s can be ordered and converted. Again the South African Mi-24 is probably the best Mi-24 variant in service today with advanced South African ATGMs. Much cheaper than buying new Hinds from Russia which is 3 Mi-35s for 100 million.
@Starlord

They can but i think Mil-35 were bought for the same COIN and support mission by providing armed support .

Hey dude. Can u tranfer ur thread to Junior cafe

which thread ?

They aren't attack roles? Like attacking Indian convoys for example?

They are not for IA armored brigades , they can surely be used for that but so far numbers are not that much , their main Purpose will be for COIN operations in FATA and Baluchistan .

Mi-17s with Mokopa or Ingwe can be used like Kuwaiti Gazelles armed with Hot missile in Gulf war. They harassed convoys and retreated quickly while inflicting as many casualties as they could with how overrun they were. CAS could be provided by newer and smaller helicopters like Ah-6 type.

From what I can calculate in a recent purchase Pakistan bought 13 Mi-17s for 50 million or about 3 million a pop. You can expect losses among the Mi-17s but if one takes out 8 Indian T-90s you can be sure that it reached 17 times its production cost which is expected among Attack helicopters before they are destroyed.

Now imagine 5 Mokopa armed Mi-17s with a total of 40 missiles going towards a Indian armored convoy, if they can take out 40 armored vehicles with losing only 1 the mission would be successful without losing a really expensive aircraft like the T129 and while inflicting many more casualties than received.

Hi,

Out of 40---you only have to destroy 13 to stop the group---.

33% losses are very heavy losses---.

Your ideas are fantastic mate, and thanks for thinking outside the box. And as @MastanKhan said, it is very hard to convince others about the viability of this. Due to new threats on the Western borders, the Pakistan attack helicopter fleet needs to increase. And this can be one of the solutions.

The only reason I would think that may prevent the Army from exploring such an option is probably something brewing in China regarding an attack Helicopter. Although Chinese attack helicopter was sent back after evaluation, I would not be surprised if the Chinese are in the process of doing major changes as per recommendations from the PA.

.
I think we will have sufficient attack helicopter fleet in future .. Current 48 AH-1F will entirely be replaced

Future / Current attack helicopter platform
> 48 Ah-1F (current, will be replaced in future)
> 4 Mi-35 (current) and more 5 reportedly ordered , speculations are that order maybe increased to 20 total
> 30 T-129 Helicopters reportedly on order (Deliveries awaiting)
> 15 AH-1Z Viper (9 air frames are already built but currently sanctioned, Talks of their retreivel from US are underway)
> 10 Fennec (Light attack and scout helicopters are in service as well
