Sharif's Claim: 'Pakistan was on its way to become Asian Tiger in 1999'

So the question still is: Was Pakistan on its way to becoming an Asian Tiger in 1999 as Nawaz Sharif claimed in his recent TV address to the nation? Or did he lie to the people?

Asian Economies had already taken a hefty beating through East Asian Crisis. Despite that the rest of the regional economies took serious economic hit, Pakistan, India and China were not only able fairly insulate themselves but also remained consistent in the face of the storm.

Nawaz Sharif is doing what every other politician has done. It is a system that has no ingenuity...

All Nawaz Sharif has done is glorified his rule (no matter how inglorious it actually was) as exemplary and exclaimed that everyone other than him of course has ruled badly. Pakistan in the 1990's was a bastion of corruption and scene to a juggling match between Benazir's PPP and Nawaz Sharif's PMLN. One would stop ruling and the other would come...

Both the PMLN and PPP should have been out of Pakistani politics had Musharraf not brought forth the NRO or National Reconciliation Ordinance. That NRO allowed all the corrupt leaders to return to politics. It was actually Musharaf's biggest mistake in the history of his rule.
yes its all the fault of system ?
attacking SC & geting away with that?
& yes mushraf NRO did made NAWAZ SHARIF buying manssions in london?
nawaz sharif paying how much taxes himself, by now on what of his wealth is the biggest problem , but still you come short of mentioning any thing about it?
wow thts what kind of, libral self corected, but crouption acceptable media we are hving in pakistan, which is hell bent to save these croupt politicians in power? cause thats the only way they are going to be paid off?
just compare, the details of accounts in possesion of both NAWAZ & MUSHARAF , with thier days in power still you find, NAWAZ SHARIF a richer lying crook with, crooked money out of pakistan?
but nt musharaf, cause he was nt croupt, so was zia, so was ayub?
with the lying mess put down on mushraf, still he stand tall without a single crouption case?
its a shame full sin,for the croupts but its a pride for patriots!

but nt musharaf, cause he was nt croupt, so was zia, so was ayub?
Not a single financial corruption case against him. They could not make a politically motivated financial case against him in 5 years

Haq's Musings: Asian Tiger Dictators Brought Prosperity; Democracy Followed

Pakistan was on a similar trajectory as the Asian Tigers during 1960s under Gen Ayub Khan's rule. GDP growth in this decade jumped to an average annual rate of 6 percent from 3 percent in the 1950s, according to Pakistani economist Dr. Ishrat Husain. Dr. Husain says: "The manufacturing sector expanded by 9 percent annually and various new industries were set up. Agriculture grew at a respectable rate of 4 percent with the introduction of Green Revolution technology. Governance improved with a major expansion in the government’s capacity for policy analysis, design and implementation, as well as the far-reaching process of institution building.7 The Pakistani polity evolved from what political scientists called a “soft state” to a “developmental” one that had acquired the semblance of political legitimacy. By 1969, Pakistan’s manufactured exports were higher than the exports of Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia combined."

Looking at examples of nations such as the Asian Tigers which have achieved great success in the last few decades, the basic ingredient in each case has been large social sector investments they have made. It will be extremely difficult for Pakistan to catch up unless similar investments are made by Pakistani leaders.

Had Pakistan's development continued on the 1960s trajectory, it is quite conceivable that Pakistan would be a prosperous democracy like the Asian Tigers today.

i think the biggest hurdle for GDP growth has been absence of a good local body system, even china and iran who are not democratic have one

the fund trickles down to the very basic level and the people are allowed to manage their funds, thus less corruption

We are missing the point... i.e. Pakistan always shined and performed when a general is reviewing the state affairs, even though the govt. is run by civilians.

I love the way Musharraf uprooted corruption from civil administration and federal institutes upon request of Sharif, back in 1997-98.

patwari league claims Pakistan on its way to become asian tiger with $300m left in Reserves, their moto "yes we can".
