Scorpene subs to join fleet without torpedoes : Navy regrets MoD Delays

The problem with the last ten years is there was a big defense budget readily available, there were no restrictive sanctions, we had multitude of options for every platform, plus there was a major drive for modernization that was taking place and the economy was doing good. This was the right time when things should have moved and this was the time that the congress and Anthony laid waste.

A Submarine without torpedoes, an aircraft carrier without Air Defence System - that kind of situation we have now .

and who is responsible for this ?

Indian defence minisitry/mininster must be nuts to do this.

A third, INS Sindhukirti, was scuttled by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, Visakhapatnam (HSL), which dismantled the submarine for refit in 2006 but cannot put it back together again.

The navy is furious that a Rs 1,500 crore frontline submarine was lost because the MoD insisted on providing work to HSL, a public sector shipyard without expertise in submarine repair. A senior admiral observes wryly, "INS Sindhukirti has already been destroyed by HSL. Now let us see whether it reduces Project 75I from six submarines to five."

OMG is this for real ?? Cant believe this could happen on such a scale .. the whole of HSL and MOD should be hanged on the Roads ..

Yes, it's true . It has happened .

and seemingly nobody has been hanged so far ...for such a shameful fiasco

This is a bit of a non-news story for the following reasons.

1) the first Scorpene won't enter service for another 2 years so the orders and deliveries for heavyweight torpedoes have over 24 months to come about.
2) the reason the Black Shark Torpedoe procurement has stalled (actually the IN HAD placed orders with them) is because of this whole MoD-Finmeccanica mess that has done exactly what I had hoped it wouldn't do, stalled defence procurements across the board as WASS is owned by Finmeccanica and the great "Saint" Antony royally screwed up and stalled all defence contracts with Finmeccanica after the AW-101 fiasco.

Let's see what the next GoI does and let's hope they are more pragmatic on defence procurements.

News does emphasize that even if new Government expeditiously clears torpedo deal ...
It will still not be possible to have torpedoes before 2019 ...

what is your say about it ?
Does it take really that long to get hold of torpedoes ?

I don't buy it at all. If Pilatus can deliver PLANES within 15 months then there's no way WASS can't deliver torpedoes in 18 months-24 months.

Hopefully at least news like these can wake up government and act fast ...

defense procurements especially as crucial as Submarine arm should not have been deal in such a casual manner.

are we resort to digging well when the house will be on fire ?

One should not therefore trash such news altogether ....

Its 2017 and not 2019. Though still Its a bad news that our scorpenes have to be tarpedo less for first 1 year.

wrong reporting.Finmeccanica got banned.thats why deal of Black Shark Torpedo wasn't signed.plus, these subs will probably get armed with homegrown Varunastra Heavyweight Torpedo.

Varunastra to undergo evaluation trials soon - The Hindu

there is talk about another heavyweight torpedo,Takshak as well.

whatever may be the reason ..isn't it true that deal does remain unsigned ?

we may have indigenous torpedo ...big question is are they good enough ? and are they ready to arm scorpene subs ?

in this sector,Indigenous products are pretty good.IN recently inducted Indian Light weight Torpedo Shyena into service.

even if Varunastra is relatively inferior(less range) to Black Shark,we should go for it,unless we would remain dependent on foreign origin arms forever.plus, the deal was cancelled due to corruption, nothing to do with "willingness" or "delay".

we shouldn't go for inferior indegenious products ...

especially when we are talking about something as precious as submarines ...

I wouldn't dare to subject billion dollar submarine to risk with equally or more precious lives of our men for few million dollar torpedoes ...NO WAY !

We need to bring our indigenous products to global standards ...
