ABU DHABI — Typhoon combat jets flown by the Royal Saudi Air Force have used Paveway IV precision-guided bombs to strike Islamic State terrorists, marking the first time the weapon has been launched in anger from the Eurofighter-built aircraft, according to gulf region sources.

The Raytheon-developed weapon was only recently cleared for service on Typhoon. The missile is fitted to Royal Air Force and Royal Saudi Air Force Typhoons, but only the gulf nation has deployed the jet against ISIS targets.

The strikes by the Saudis come little more than a year after the US State Department lifted a long-time block on the gulf state purchasing the weapon. No reason was ever given publicly on why export approval was denied.

Paveway IV was co-developed by the British and US arms of Raytheon.

Raytheon declined to comment.

So far, Saudi Arabia is the only known export customer for Paveway IV, although Oman may follow suit as it has also ordered the Eurofighter jet.

Saudi Arabia ordered 72 Typhoons in a deal with BAE Systems in 2007 and over half the aircraft have been delivered.

The Rafale holds 3 HAMMRs in one station. Rafale is a lot better in ground strike role than typhoon no doubt, but Typhoon is more of an Air-Air specialist.

Not with its current radar it ain't.

The Captor-Eis coming online soon. Saudi Typhoons will have their own radars if we are to believe the articles from 2-3 years ago. A version of the Captor-E by a joint KACST and PSATRI team.

Yeah the typhoon is expanding its Air-Ground capabilities, but there will always be frame limitations. The Rafale can go for a little bit longer (About 100-200 kilometers if my memory serves) also can carry about 1.8 Tonnes more of ordinance. The Rafale is a great competitor to the F-15E and the Su-34 no doubt .

If they decide to fund it .They move so slowly when debating upgrades for the EF.:(

Saudi Arabia agreed to help fund the Typhoon modernization program. The price? Being a partner nation and a permemant member of the Typhoon council, which Saudi Arabia got. I always say it may not appear so flashy but Saudi Arabia currently is as much a partner in the Typhoon as Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK. Pretty much Saudi Arabia currently has a veto and it used it once to push for bombing integration instead of Radar as a priority.

That's indeed good news because the Typhoon is a wonderful platform with room for many future upgrades. The pitty was that the Euros, left on their own devices, would have pussyfooted around the money issue for ever. And the EF would have missed alot of opportunities.

Also King Andulaziz City of Science and Technology which is Saudi Arabia's state owned research agency (Think of it as Saudi Arabia's MIT/DARPA) got free rein in regards to the Typhoon, Saudi Arabia never ever received as a larger quantity of technology transfer as it did with the Typhoon. From the Radar to the wind tunnels technology to the RCS reduction science was just given to KACST from the typhoon program.

A fellow researcher said the amount of tech Europe transferred in the deal would keep them busy for the next 10 years in aeronautical, propellant, stealth and aerodynamics technology. It was part of the tech transfer that was originally planned when Saudi arabia wanted to assemble and manufacture some parts of the Typhoon. The contrast however clearly stated that it was separate from the manufacturing so the tech transfer continued anyways. Currently there are about 13 separate programs running alongside one another from the Typhoon tech, but my confidentiality contract doesn't allow me to go into detail of anythjng that wasn't officially announced. Some programs were shelved but you can't really expect all R&Ds programs to succeed and I came to terms with that in my own time.

Al-Salam is half owned by Boeing as you know. Because Boeing saw a real danger of the Typhoon taking over the F-15 market in Saudi Arabia. They did everything in their power to sabotage the Typhoon production. As we know the original idea was to have 144 Typhoons in the RSAF with 120 of them being made in Kingdom.
Boeing screwed the contract, but they offered the F-15SR which is the designation of the Saudi modified F-15S (Saudi Retrofitted SR. while the SA stands for Saudi Advanced) the Saudi SR and SA will also dumb a ridiculous amount of technology into Saudi Arabia. It already did, for the first time in our history we are actually manufacturing Fighter Jet parts, these parts to be exact. (Image up)
