What's new

Saudi Arabia wasn't always as rich as you might think...

I am worried about rule of law, quality of human resources and other soft factors for service fields.

Shanghai, for example, is rated #5 top financial city in the world (Financial centre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) due to its strategic location, large and highly educated population, and most importantly, stability and liberal laws.

No offense, but not many people would be willing to send their financial services to be done by workers educated in a madrassa, that follow tribal versions of Sha'ria and in a low density place.

no offense but by this comment, you have hugely lower your respect in front of me and other guys, you have no rights to comment on issues you so little understand, tribal, and shariah words were used unnecessarily, saudi doesnt follow shariah, it follows capitalism, saudis also follow monarchy which has nothing to do with shariah

you china is now growing under umbrella of capitalism, but some decades ago china was nothing with strict communism laws

It is okay it is not his fault. Its the media's I learned not to critisize people on what they know or don't know but instead let them seek the truth themselves.

That's good. I think Saudi has more potential in the service industry, but all economies should have some solid manufacturing base as well.

The problem is, Saudis are already so rich, why would they work in factories?

Not everyone is as rich as everyone might think. There are plenty of people struggling to make it through the day and did not get good marks in highschool or in the SATs. And they can't work around expat workers from other countries (they often make the saudi's life hell because they see him as a threat to their job) I personally know someone with this problem.
And the new Nitaqat system is directed at that portion of the society.

i stand by my statement. i did not say sharia was tribal, i said that saudi arabia follows a mixture of tribal laws and sharia. such as beheading people, cutting hands off, not allowing women to drive and other things.

may i remind you that china even in the Mao eras has achieved things that India and Pakistan both have not been able to achieve today, 40 years later? so it is better to be humble, and not attack others for things so easily refuted.

Do you know that Saudi, with strict laws like beheading, cutting hand off etc. in public has one of the (if not, the) lowest crime rate in the world and is one of the safest place to live?

If oil is finished the whole world is screwed including KSA.

I think they are still tweeking it while the factory won't be finished until atleast 2012. the car could be on the road by the end of 2012 with a 2013 model like many cars do.
This car was mainly a students project at the university after the tech transfer from south korea and germany went to the university. So in the end it is a student's project not a company's effort just to show case the engineering ability of the Saudi Youth and the quality of university education in saudi arabia.

But for a bunch of students to make a car that a company is actually interested in on mass producing is an achievement by itself. Also the same university is making a UAV while KAU in jeddah is making helicopter. again all who are making these are students.

Well saudia is gradually , moving up but they are still not spending on Research and development - at core levels 80% of stuff is coming thru packaged , and the local ppl do not know how it works

Kind of same issue Pakistan faced.

Saudia is blessed with Sunshine 365 days a week , if they invested in Solar Energy , they could easily export this clear energy out to world instead of just focusing on oil revenue

Saudia (Dammam - GWADAR) electricity project would be fantastic for Saudia - Pakistan

The car video said the engine was of Mercedez class

Engine is the whole heart of project - and that is problem with all Muslim nations they can't build one engine

Thank you for the info.

I am waiting eagerly to see gazal 1 zooming on the roads.

That is also true. But I hate moral police and shudder at the thought of beheadings/cutting hands, reminds me too much of the bad old feudal days. I don't just hate moral police in Saudi Arabia either. I hate them just as bad here.
