New Saudi marriage contracts to ask the bride's age


Saudi Arabia has started issuing new marriage contracts that require the age of the bride to be given, in an attempt to stop underage girls from marrying.

The kingdom had promised new measures after a series of high-profile cases involving young brides.

Human rights groups have welcomed the new measures, saying clear-cut rules were needed to ensure underage girls were not harmed.

Saudi Arabia has no law against child marriage.

"There is a serious drive by the [justice] ministry to determine an age for girls to marry following the recent reporting of older men marrying young girls," an official told the Saudi-based Arab News newspaper.

The National Society for Human Rights welcomed the new measures.

"The marriage of underage girls has been in the limelight for the past three years," said NSHR chairman Mufleh Al-Qahtani.

"A number of lawsuits have also been filed to stop fathers marrying off their underage girls to older men."

In February a 12-year-old girl decided to stay married to an 80-year-old man, after initially filing for divorce.

A $22,600 (£14,174) dowry had been paid to her father just months before.

In 2008, the case of an eight-year-old girl who was married to a 50-year-old man was revealed when the child's mother tried to annul the marriage.

Defenders of child marriage say the practice is part of Saudi culture.

Saudi Arabia implements an austere form of Sunni Islam that bans free association between the sexes and gives fathers the right to wed their children to whomever they deem fit.

my islamic knowledge is not that much and is limited, but i have heard from a few mullahs that her age is disputed, many believe she had reached above 16-17.

A nine-year-old Chinese schoolgirl has become one of the world's youngest mothers after giving birth to a healthy boy.

The unnamed girl was brought to a hospital in Changchun, which lies in the north-east of the country, when she was eight and a half months pregnant.

Two days later, she gave birth to the 6lb boy by Caesarean section, a Chinese newspaper has reported.


The youngest reported mother in the world - and the most bizarre of all young pregnancy cases - is five-year-old Lina Medina of Peru, who gave birth to a 6lb son named Gerardo in a Caesarean operation in 1939.

Her father was arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse but was later released because of lack of evidence.

In 1957 another Peruvian girl, aged nine, gave birth to a girl weighing just over 6lb and, curiously, it was in 2006 that yet another Peruvian girl, aged eight, gave birth to a 4lb 4oz girl.

Several other girls aged nine, from Thailand, Singapore, Rwanda and Brazil, have also given birth.

Mothers aged as young as 10 and 11 have also become an increasing occurrence.

The youngest mother in Britain is believed to have been 11 when she got pregnant and 12 years old when she gave birth.

Two points.

1. Any girl who attain puberty can be of marriageable age.

2. This practice is going on in many countries in some some are going on without solemnizing the marriage and some without it.


The bottom line is it depends on the parties involved how they see it.


Though its good that there should be a law fixing the age for the marriage BUT again the point is in how many countries this law is applied in letter and spirit ?

Child Brides are common issue in even India and Pakistan.


My take is that Instead of fixing age limit We should have strict Laws to stop Forced Marriages which is one of the reason for child marriages too.

Saudi Arabia needs to stop some (most but I do not think they want to) of the barbaric acts that the people of their country engage in.

This is a good start as child marriage is wrong, in this day and age things are done differenty and everyone has to abide by the universal standards.

As for the yougest mother, a 6 or 7 year old girl old in peru gave birth to a boy in the late 1930's.

Look her up, her body accelerated growth and she was able to conceive but through cesarian section, her child died in the 1960's or 70's but she is still alive and has never disclosed who the father was.

Her name is Lina Medina.
