It was first rumored in August 2010 that SAC is developing a 3.5 generation heavy multi-role fighter bomber (J-16?) based on J-11BS. The aircraft can be viewed as an upgraded version of Su-30MKK based on its mission and capability, which is comparable to American F-15E. First flight was rumored to be between 2011-2012. J-16 has tandem seats with a WSO sitting in the backseat. It features an enhanced fire-control system (AESA?) with additional AG modes. Besides PL-8 and PL-12 AAMs, it could also carry the same precision guided weapons being carried by JH-7A, such as KD-88 ASM and LS-500J LGB.Compared to JH-7A, J-16 is expected to have a more powerful radar (AESA?), a greater weapon load (8t) and a longer range (4,000km).

According to the information from FYJS and CJDBY, J16 made the first flight today

How many under construction projects do you guys have? :)

Looks alot like the Sukhoi T-50, but with some inspiration from the Sukhoi T-10(SU-27) family.

It'd likely have a huge payload and range, superior to the J-11/SU-30 they'll replace in the deep-strike role.

Tweaked design of Mig-29, Anyone.!!!
Here we go again, i really recommend spectacles before commenting. Its based on J-11B which resembles SU-27 not Mig-29

Where would that flight have taken place? Yanliang or SAC?

Whats the purpose of this fighter as they have Su-30 MKK & J-11.

They could have easily upgrade it then designing a new fighter.

Is this jet has internal weapon bays?

The guy on FYJS who posted this news says that the J-16 is actually smaller than the Su-27 though, and he mentioned that he's a bit confused regarding its intended role because of it.
