Top Commodity: Russia Has Its Hands Full With S-400 Orders
NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The Indian Air Force plans to introduce Russian S-400 Triumf Missile System to its military arsenal next year. The cost of the deal has not been divulged by India but according to other sources, India is likely to pay approximately USD 6 billion for five S400 units.

Expressing enthusiasm over the performance of the S-400 Triumf Missile System, Parrikar said in Parliament today that the S-400 has better performance parameters compared to the S-300 in many respects, such as maximum and minimum target engagement range, minimum target engagement altitude, and maximum speed of target engaged. Parrikar also said that the S-400 is better in terms of the number of targets and maximum radar cross-section of targets engaged simultaneously as compared to the S-300. It also takes less deployment time as compared to the S-300.

India's Defense Acquisition Council approved the purchase of the S-400 Triumf Missile Systems along with associated equipment and missiles from Russia. According to the Defense Minister, a separate contract has been signed for the supply of five Full Mission Simulators for SU-30 MKI aircraft with a Russian firm during 2015-16.

Air Marshal Anil Chopra (Retd.) tells Sputnik:

"The S-400 has many qualities. It has a very high range. Our 40-year-old existing air defense system has a range of only 20-25 kilometers. With S-300 and S-400 [systems], we can target enemy aircraft from a range of 250 kilometers. If we are to protect big cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, this system will help us destroy enemy planes and missiles from quite a far range. Secondly, the S-400 is quite precise. The old system lacks precision. The S-400 has 95% precision hitting the target. The precision of our existing system is only about 80%."

The S-400 is the most advanced air defense system in the world and many countries are vying to purchase the units including China. However, Russia has made it clear to prospective buyers that it will only sell the system to foreign countries after its own military requirements are fulfilled.

This is going to be a real game changer, when this baby arrives the sheer raw power it has and the way it will launch those missiles gives me a hard on.

Where will these units be based? Not all are going to border with Pakistan?

Being mobile and not static they can be moved around, Knowing our babas you can bet Delhi would be protected lol being the seat of power and where many of the elite live. Next I can see Mumbai being protected but if Mumbai is so will Pune (where we have a airbase) the reason is the range of these systems.

The rest I don't know...

Wasn't there a missile which has a higher range with the S400?? Are we not getting that?

That S-400 in Red Dress is really Deadly.......India has made the right choice......don't know if 5 units of her should cost $6 billion to India......

is there is a time frame as to how long they will be in service? and why was it that the previous systems were in service for 30 years?

Would have been nice if the discussion was on the missile instead of being sexist.

Coming back to the discussion

- Would you characterize the purchase - strategic or tactical?

- How much stock can we put on S-400, there is vast division of opinion regarding it's efficacy with Russians hyping it's virtues and other parties indicating that it can be countered easily with EW and or saturation attacks which is likely to be the case in major conflict.

- Are there other comparable systems in which we have access to in arms market? If not then are there any domestic projects in development. I am worried we are offering Russia a sweetheart deal, S-400s in return for financing other projects.

- How much areas can one of these system can cover - We probably have around 40- 50 HVT in India.

- Is it likely to change the military balance b/w India-Pakistan and if Yes then to what extent? Does it provide us with extra options in Kargil like skirmishes or in deterring a possible counter-strike against Indian targets in case of Indian attack on terrorist camps on Pakistani Soil.
