The upgrade is a HUGE upgrade, and requires key components like AESA radars, and structural changes. If we could do it here in India, we would have had LCA, MCA, and even HCA inducted by now.

100% true. The reason why we still import is because MOD netas, top commanders and generals want kickbacks to continue. It's because we live in one of the worst neighborhoods in the world. Most small neighbors are paranoid and have a history of aggression. The only big neighbor does 'hit and run jobs' like 1962 because apparently they have money and man power to spend.
Just be thankful to our Parliamentarians because they are making this transition as slow as possible. India should have done this a good 5 years ago.
