MOSCOW (BNS): Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport is planning to participate in a new six diesel-electric submarines tender of the Indian Navy, according to media reports.

"There is a new tender, with the new requirements, and together with [Russia's] Rubin design bureau we are making a proposal to India for Amur 650 class submarines," RIA Novosti quoted Oleg Azizov, head of Rosoboronexport’s delegation at the IMDS exhibition and Chief of Navy Special Equipment and Services Export Department, as saying.

To strengthen the navy's depleted fleet, Indian Navy is planning to commission around 12 submarines in the next decade.

“Amur class is a fourth-generation vessel, and Russia has all chances to win the tender," he added.

In February, Indian Navy has announced to issue an $11 billion global tender in 2011 for the procurement of six next generation submarines.

The Indian Navy is willing to procure submarines "with better stealth capability, improved detection range and combat management system."

According to Azizov, Amur class subs match these requirements perfectly, as their sonar signature level is several times less than that of Kilo class submarines which are considered at present the most silent in the world.

In addition, Amur 650 could be equipped with the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems on the basis of fuel cells to increase considerably the endurance and cruise range in a submerged state.

Companies from France, Germany and Spain will also participate in the tender, it said.

I suspect Russia will win the tender. Russian conventional subs generally have greater displacement than Western European ones, due to the need for longer endurance at sea. IN needs to cover a vast area in the Indian Ocean, and that should come in handy.

Yeah. It will be interesting though. No Amur class submarines have been built yet. India will be the first user. No idea about the other contenders but this class of submarines looks pretty advanced.

The Amur class submarine, designated as the project 950 Амур, (named for the Amur River), is one of the latest Russian submarine class which are advertised as the export version of the Lada class, a highly improved version of the Kilo-class submarine with much better quieting, new combat systems, and an option for air-independent propulsion.
The new vessel is the 4th generation submarine with the capability of striking salvo missile blows at different targets. The sonar signature level of the submarines of this class is several times lower in comparison with “Kilo” class submarines. These submarines are equipped with radio-electronic weapons of the newer generation created on the basis of the latest achievements in the field of radio-electronics. These submarines can be outfitted with AIP fuel cells, considerably improving submerged endurance and range. AIP capability can be added as hull extension plug either during new build construction or as a refit existing ships.
It is expected that these vessels can operate in all areas of the World Ocean except the areas with solid ice cover, in all weather conditions, in shallow and deep water areas.

Does anyone has any info on the other contenders?

India should not even hold a competition just go with the Russian submarine as the IN primary sub is the Kilo the Amur class will have some similar characteristics with it

lada class submarine more advance then amur class. Why they ofer us lada version ?What about S1000 class submarine ?

Though the Indian Navy Submarine Arm is more conversant with the Russian submarines, they are very cramped.

Yeah..Russia seems to have cut down some capabilities on the Export oriented Amur. But I suspect India would go in for components from other suppliers like they did with the Sukhoi 30MKI. Either ways, it is still more advanced than the Kilo class submarines and quieter than the Scorpenes.

it will be better choice for geman 214 class.More stealth, better navigation

all the Scorpenes class built by india are equip with AIP ?

this is the s1000 class submarine which is a joint development between Italy and Russia it is said to be more capable than the Amur class submarine itself which is a less capable version of the Lada class submarine

why is Russia offering IN a less capable Amur class? why not offer Lada subs???? S1000 or Lada class subs should be the IN choice

Actually, the Kokum of Sweden was a better and more silent of the diesel electric variety.

Stealth? I doubt it. Kilo class submarines are quiter and Amur is quiter than the Kiloclass.
But yes it does have more endurance in terms of days. Speed though is 2 knots slower than Amur. I know the Pakistani Navy is procuring some.
