T99 was never built and T84 Oplot is in the same weight category as Al-Khalid.

@Horus

t-99 will be rebranded as armata by next year.

It's not t 99 it's t 90S . It's the auto correction that changed.

T 99 will be out some times next year, will likely enter service around 2018-2020

Why do we need T-90s when we have AL-Khalids. (Same class of tanks) ?

Armata is basically the chassis that will be used to built a MBT, a IFV, a CEV and a ARV.
T 99 is the name assigned to the next gen. MBT being built be Russian on that proposed chassis .
For further clarification read the following
The "Armata" Universal Combat Platform is a Russian advanced next generation heavy military tracked vehicle platform. The "Armata" platform is intended to be the basis for a main battle tank, a heavy infantry fighting vehicle, a combat engineering vehicle, an armoured recovery vehicle, a heavy armoured personnel carrier, a tank support combat vehicle and several types of self-propelled artillery under the same codename based on the same chassis. It will also serve as the basis for artillery, air defense, and NBC defense systems.[1]

Well AL khalid program is in stasis since 06 due to lack of funds. Al Zarrar program is being winded down. All AL Zarrars r to be decommissioned n replaced in due Time along with the 100s of t 55, t 59 n other obselete tanks.
All that can't be met by Al khalid(if at all).
We need to buy n do it quick.

Front runner at this point is the oplot as its by far the best tank out their n plus our t 80 ud r up for a major overhaul n the Ukrainians r offering a upgrade package to bring our existing lot to oplot standard, well almost very close to it.

there were plans already to upgrade T-80 to T-84 so this is not new news. i doubt if Russia will offer the T-90 bcuz they have a long-lead agreement with India for the supply of the T-90.

however it must be noted that PK has been upgraded by Russia from D category to B category which means that Russia will still not deliver their 'top-line' products to PK which fall in A category (India is A)

its seems T-84 would be the logical choice since you people already have its predecessor
PA has some 800 vintage tanks that require replacements

shouldnt some of those be replaced by Al khalid Block II or III

Russia as offered as not just the T 90 but it's very latest variant ie "S".

Their are Reports that Even India will order some 384 T-90SM over and above the current order for 1657 T-90S

The decision comes after Army decided to Cap the T-72 Ajeya upgrade programme at 950 Tanks inducted between 1988-94
and not to upgrade older Tanks which could only serve for 10 yrs after MLU
