Rs 25,000 crore Navy's LPD tender only for private sector

L&T has substantial capability of on time delivery of products as it has 2 state of the art shipyards at Hazira & Kattupalli.
On the other hand dry dock of Pipavav is 662 meters long and 65 meters wide, the second largest in the world.
Due these capabilities of these private shipyards I think IN will receive ships on schedule for first time.

. .
How difficult it is to design LPD? If India is building aircraft carrier on its own why JV for LPDs? May be just get design consultancy?

I guess it would have not been bad if Navy has finalized design and asked for bids from private shipyards to build that.

.
The new government seems to be on steroids to get all secularly delayed projects back on track.

Crucial at a time when we have so much instability in the neighbourhood & have fewer friends in the region.

We need a domestic alternative. Buying is the easy way out & of course, short sighted.

Same can be done with 3 follow on talwar class frigates .
Let Russians choose a private shipyard and build here with licence.

designing a complicated ship like an LPD takes time
specially when u are doing it the first time
it took 4 yrs to prepare the design of the INS Vkirant
the Navy needs the first LPD to be delivered by yr 2022 , in time for the replacement of INS Jalashwa

i guess these are the firms (& their designs) for which Indian companies have done tie up for technical collaboration. For a project of this scale, it would be a good learning experience for the domestic shop builders to manufacture a big ships. Later this experience can be used for indigenous production of fleet tankers, large cargo vessels etc.

.
They should Give one LPD Tender to each private company. We'll all 4 LPDs at the same time.

Wow, they're not playing around in capability building. They're serious in find other avenues, even DRDO has many products being manufactured by private companies.

Pretty massive ships these guys want to build.

Private companies have an opportunity to build BMP-2 repalcement - tracked and wheeled FICV

Private companies have an opportunity to build AVRO transport replacement- medium-sized transport

Private companies have an opportunity to build Cheetah and Chetak replacement - LUH

Private companies have an opportunity at a frkn LPD!

Two of which will be built in a completely new, modern factory! (Armored and Aero) The other factories and shipyards are relatively new as well.

The PSUs were acting like a barber attending many customers. Kisika muchh adha kat dena, kisiko adha hajamat kar dena, kisiko adha mundan kar ke rakhna. Now this thing will end. Plus apna paisa apna ghar mein rahega. Job prospects will improve there by creation of more skilled workers from ITIs, Diplomas etc.

This is just not feasible from any point. Will be a loss making project from the start, no economics of scale, no immediate experience use, experience gained will be lost very fast, naval personnal training is not possible in correct way as if all four ships are ready together then we need trained manpower together also. Not way it will possible. If we start giving traing from start, they will be ready too early, no ship to practice they will loose their knowledge. If trained in last stage they will be inexperienced and all four boats can't be given in such hands together. They need to practice continues but I don't think any country will allow such a large contingent on their boats. That's why we build in batch so that we have time to train the manpower. Thank you.

In my opinion we should develop these three in spcialized role only. That is L&T should focus on sub-surface boats, ABG should focus on patrol vessel class with carvettes role and finally as you said Pipapav should be alocated heavy weight category ships. These should be their primary role with secondary role as support in other two boat type.

ABG is quite old company, seems suitable option.

The Defence Ministry has decided that only private sector shipyards, including Pipavav, ABG and L and T, along with their foreign partners, would be allowed to take part in the Rs 25,000 crore project for building the four Landing Platform Docks, Navy sources said.
