To be fair, humans always fought ech other for most of history. What is hypocritical is that muslims theoretically believe that islam is a religion of peace, and that muslims will not harm each other, and an that ummah will be at peace, although they have been fighting each others and others since islam began, with the prophet himself waging wars. They continued the very same fights and wars that other people at the time did, either to bring about the dreamt ummah, or to figure out who is the real muslim, or to make others muslims, or for economic and political reasons like christians and hindus and everybody else did. What is sad is that from the late 20th and early 21rst century, most other people have learnt to live in peace and worry only about prosperity, rather than about siezing power for themselves.

And BTW, if Indians had not poked their noses, there would have been no Bangladesh today. The existence of B'desh might be a sad thing for jamatis and razakars, but not for proud Bangladeshi citizens.

That is a very powerful statement. More power to you for saying it.

Very interesting post. You seem to be the one of a couple, who wants something positive from this debate. The rest (with few exceptions)- including Indians- just want point scoring over Pakistanis.

Many Pakistanis have this perennial confusion over "freedom fighters" and terrorists. Whom the world lauds as freedom fighters, they call terrorists. But whom the entire world classifies as terrorists, they call "freedom fighters". So hizb-ul-this and harkat-ul-that and lashkar-e-this and lashkar-e-that are all "freedom fighters", fighting in faraway places, which goes against the concept of freedom fighting for one's own land. But nation builders, people who's resistance created new nations with the will of the people, are terrorists for them.

You are going to have a long, assiduous task, trying to explain the difference between freedom fighting and terrorism to most Pakistanis.

Just go through Brian Cloughely's book on the Pakistan Army to see for yourself how the British virtually stopped recruitment from Bengal after the 1857 Mutiny and amongst the Muslims tilted it heavily in favor of the Punjabis & Pukhtoons. I don't have the book with me right now so I can't quote the exact figures but at the end of WW2 the ratio of Bengalis to Punjabis and Pukhtoons in the Army wasn't even worthy of mentioning.

The same was the case with the Civil Services and much more so in fact because the Hindu Bengalis were more represented in the Civil Services than the Muslim Bengal and most of them left for East-Bengal at the time of the Partition. I can't seem to remember the name of the author or the name of the book either for that matter but a year or two ago I read a book written by the guy who started the Civil Services of Pakistan and he detailed, with generously well-referenced figures, of how lop-sided the Bengali representation in the Civil Services were at the time of the Partition and how ironically enough it was during Ayub Khan's ministry when Bengalis were inducted in the Civil Services and the Army on an accelerated basis by relaxing the standards for them.

And this, by the way, was happening in a developing country where a myriad other grievances and problems remained unsolved.

So try to look at it from a more panoramic view instead of in such a vacuum; so less Bengalis in the Army baaad....baaad West-Pakistani !

There was a reason why they were so less and it wasn't because of the undying hatred of the West-Pakistani towards the Bengali !

This racism was facilitated by the higher command to make the soldiers from west Pakistan feel less inclined to show any mercy for East Pakistanis. If there had been more representation of Bengalis in the armed forces then these things would not have been tolerated.

I know many people don't like it when I say these things but, we are still not one nation, Punjabis are proud to be Punjabis, Sindhis are proud to be sindhis etc. And some among our establishment still exploits these ethnic tensions, some people just do not learn.

I have read the demands made by Mujeeb, and I see nothing objectionable in it. The only people who saw it dangerous to their positions were the elite in west Pakistan who were suddenly afraid they would lose all their power and lavish life style.

I was reading some history that in first constituent Assembly of Pakistan, everyone was worried how to clip the power of Bengalis like trying to confine representation of just 20% to Eastern wing and 80% to Western Wing in the upper house in the name of equal representation for all 5 provinces.
