KARACHI - Secretary Defence Production, Lt Gen ® Shahid Iqbal HI (M) chaired an impressive ceremony for launching of two Pusher Tugs, constructed for Pakistan Navy at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Ltd here on Friday.
Senior Flag officers, delegates from friendly countries attending IDEAS 2012 and dignitaries from Maritime Sector, Defence Industries and Pakistan Navy were present. The event was planned in connection with the international defense exhibition IDEAS 2012.
These Pusher Tugs with a displacement of 55 tons can achieve a speed of 10 knots with Bollard Pull of 12 tons. Its Push bow and fenders have been especially designed for safe handling of submarines in harbour.
In his address, chief guest Lt Gen (r) Shahid Iqbal highlighted significance of the occasion as this is showcasing the capacity and capability of Pakistan in Defence Production, which is the central theme of the ongoing IDEAS 2012. It is indeed a clear manifestation of the indigenisation policies of our government and a proud moment for KS&EW, he said.
The Defence Secretary expressed satisfaction on continued success of Karachi Shipyard in achieving major targets of its business plan both in shipbuilding and general engineering projects. This success is attributable to sound planning of the management and relentless efforts of its work force, he added.
Earlier delivering welcome address, Managing Director Karachi Shipyard, Rear Admiral Hasan Nasir Shah SI (M), informed that these Tugs have been indigenously built at KS&EW with international quality standards and KS&EW has achieved complete self sufficiency for construction of such vessels.
In last two years KS&EW has delivered four of such vessels taking total tally to 19 tugs made at KSEW, he said. He also expressed gratitude to MVRDE for entrusting KSEW for construction of 15 Bridge erection boats for Pakistan Navy.
Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Projects), Rear Admiral Abdul Aleem SI (M) said that Karachi Shipyard has always been the main support for Pakistan Navy Fleet for new construction as well as repair of ships.
The present event is also the continuation of its long lasting commitment with Pakistan Navy, he said.
He said that in recognition of the commendable support, Pakistan Navy also entrusted Karachi Shipyard with F22P Frigate, FAC-M No 2, 32 Ton Bollard Pull Tug and Multipurpose Barge construction projects.

Just curious what sort of engine does it uses ! Is it imported or made domestically ? Also if that can be modified heavily for other ships or evolved if someone answers the latter ...
