Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz has said the provincial government will bear the power cost of households that consume up to 100 units of electricity in a month.

Addressing a press conference on Monday in Lahore, he said the government has set aside Rs100 billion for the relief program that will benefit at least nine million households.

The program will apply to households that consumed up to 100 units per month in last six months, the chief minister added.

Shahbaz recalled how he went to jail for the first time during his days at the Government College in Lahore.

The incumbent Punjab CM called out to save the public from inflation and improve the country’s economy.

“When PML-N government completed its tenure in 2018, wasn’t the growth rate above 5%?” he questioned.

Taking a jibe at former prime minister Imran Khan, Hamza said he would not make statements like he will commit suicide if he has to go to the IMF.

He told the media that the public is tired of hearing the same old slogans of thieves and dacoits. “The public just wants relief somehow.”

Hamza went on to say that for the past three months, political gimmicks have been doing the rounds on social media. “My journey has been filled with the law and constitutional crisis,” he said. “Sometimes the chief minister’s election is adjourned three to four times. Then there is an attack on the deputy speaker while the President keeps rejecting summaries.”

*Meanwhile IMF has still not given money

I am honestly surprised, or rather worried, about the intellectual capacity of people who actually fall for these sort of statements.

If you want to support N league, sure, go ahead by all means, they might do some good things too.

But how the heck can you really fall for this stuff?

People who fall for these statements have less wrinkles in their brain than on their forehead! Thori so to apni aqal ko hath maro yar.

Supplying free electricity to half the population on Punjab? So half the population of Punjab consumes less than 100 units a month? Are you kidding me?

Then 100 unit families get a relief? I am willing to bet that less than 5% of people use less than 100 units a month, and that is being gracious.

And finally, IK 42 billion subsidy main nikalay (which holds back inflation and increased costs), and that's bringing us to default, but this 100 billion subsidy isn't?

Finally, and I might be wrong on this one, but how can Punjab government give a subsidy on electricity? Aren't the DISCOs independent companies? Moreover, they buy electricity from CPPA on the rate which NEPRA sets, where does Punjab government come into this?

No government has the actual ability to bear economic costs of anything. It is the taxpayers that do that.

Even if they give it, at this point the amount they loan will only cover interests payments on further loans that will need to be taken. The bleedING needs to be stop ASAP if this downward spiral is to be stopped and reversed.

All the other loans from countries and institutions are attached with IMF nod
