Progress in Rafale jet talks with UAE, says France - The Economic Times

By AFP | 16 Apr, 2015, 09.14PM IST

PARIS: French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said today negotiations to sell its increasingly popular Rafale fighter jets to the United Arab Emirates were "going in the right direction".

His comment came just days after he cryptically responded "all things come in threes" when asked about talks with the UAE on the plane, which has already been snapped up by Egypt and India this year in multi-billion-euro deals.

"There are discussions that are taking place with the Emirates and they are going in the right direction," Fabius told the Anglo-American Press Association in Paris.

A deal with the Gulf country would be yet another coup for Rafale manufacturer Dassault, which struggled for years to export its fighter jet.

But earlier this year, Egypt bought 24 Rafales in a $ 5.6-billion deal negotiated in just three months, prompting hopes in Paris that the agreement would act as a catalyst to unblock hoped-for sales to other countries.

Sure enough, India followed suit and last week announced the order of 36 Rafale jets during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to France.

The two sides had already been engaged in years of tortuous, exclusive negotiations for the sale of 126 Rafales, but these had been bogged down over cost and New Delhi's insistence on assembling a portion of the high-tech planes in India.

So India, whose airforce is in dire need of new jets to update its ageing fleet, made a quick order for 36 planes while negotiations continue on finalising the initial 126-jet agreement.

France hardly can produce 12 jets a year so they have orders from India and Egypt already so now from UAE I don't think so

France may divert its order to meet India's demand for Rafale - The Economic Times
One of the problems facing the Dassault Aviation is the production rate of the jets. At present, reports suggest it has a capacity to make about 12 aircraft per annum. This is in line with the French orders that they have in hand.

"Dassault will have to ramp up its production capacities to meet both Egypt and Indian orders at the same time. While they will obviously do it, it cannot happen overnight," sources said, pointing out that various other firms like Thales are also part of the Rafale project.

but According to Times of India.

The capacity of the Dassault plant is 36 aircraft per anum and the Indian version of the aircraft will have to be fine- tuned as per its requirement

Like the Eurofighter Consortium, France would rather divert the aircrafts for exports.

Secondly, the UAE's procurement has always insisted on cutting edge tech. Blk60 being an example. This was one reason why this deal was bogged down, Dassault / France didn't not want to bear the development cost ASAP.

It will be interesting to see what configuration they finally end up with.

@Gabriel92 any updates.............?

The current Rafale production rate at Dassault Aviation’s Bordeaux-Mérignac plant is of 11 aircraft per year --the minimum rate the company says is economically feasible.
But they can increase the production to 2.5 rafale/months (~30 Rafale/year)

Any news on the Specification of the UAE jets?

Nothing for now,we will know more when the deal will be signed.
Even I will know when the deal is signed. Point was to ask you if any details were floating in the French media or some other info you were privy to e.g. the Damocles pod issue.:-)

They can easily ramp up production. Thats not even an issue.

The Eurofighter has a lot to think about it though. All potential customers of new gen fighter jets are snapping up Rafale.

With the new cracks in EF, they need to fix the aircrafts & manufacturing first!!:p:

I believe that India will probably order another 36 Rafales

this will allow us to replace 4 Sqds of Mig27

let Tejas replace the remaining 8 Mig21 Sqds

while FGFA can replace Jaguars and Mig 29

Did you bother reading the OP? This thread is about the UAE Rafale order. NOT about what India wants or will do.:crazy::crazy:

Any news on the Specification of the UAE jets?

The UAE Air Force has focused on an upgrade of the systems and engine of the Rafale, including active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, frontal sector optronic and an electronic warfare suite, systems supplied by Thales, and a 9-ton-thrust M88 engine, uprated from the 7.5-ton engine that powers the French Air Force and Navy fighters.

The UAE has been insisting on these upgrades from Day 1, simply because without these upgrades the Rafale would be equivalent to an F16 Blk 52+ (with AESA radar, in terms of capability, not payload)

Going by their procurement policy, my gut feeling is that the UAE will be buying something better than the upcoming F3R version. F3R+ or F4.

The original question from day one, still remains valid, who will fund these upgrades? Once these issue us resolved, I wouldn't be surprised if UAE buys 80 to 120.

Hold your horses France. Just how many Rafales do you plan on selling exactly? It seems like Year of the Rafale.
