ISLAMABAD, Dec 23 (APP): Responding to High Commissioner’s suggestion for further expansion of bilateral trade, the Prime Minister stated that Pakistan was keen to start direct shipping links between Karachi and Chitagong, opening of banks branches in each others’ countries and setting up of the Warehouses to increase the volume of trade to the level agreed at the Eighth Session of Joint Economic Commission held in September 2005.

Bangladesh needs a huge quantity of cotton. Our Trade Minister has recently visited Uzbekistan to talk about purchasing cotton from that country. However, I think, it is much easy for the Pakistani business people to make the purchasing from Uzbekistan, and ship the cotton in bulk to BD.

Pakistani businesses can lease warehouses in Chittagong or Mongla, ship the cotton there and BD businesses can purchase the goods directly from these warehouses without any loss of time. This will enhance BD-Pakistan trade.

I like your proposal however I do not think that Awami league would agree. Pakistan already offer us a route to central Asia for entrance of our goods however Awami league ignored it. It's rather busy to please it's Hindu masters.

A "brotherly relation" with any country is a positive development, but we have to be careful in our approach. Getting too close to Pakistan - i.e. treating each other like allies - will hurt our relation with our good neighbor next door. We should keep the relation on a "mutual economic cooperation level" and must not let Pakistan use us against indian interests.

Can you elaborate about so called "good neighbor next door"? I do not know whether to laugh or inform you about your hibernating state.

AL is only less than half the affair of BD politics. A country's life is much longer than a political party. The way AL is ruling, results in the next election may be reversed.

If not through Afghanistan/Pakistan, then how BD will purchase goods from a landlocked Uzbekistan? India has already reduced its cotton exports to BD because it has to fulfill its own internal need. When Indian economy grows more, there will be little export from there.

BD is now trying to buy this item from two central regions, one is in africa and the other is in asia. If it is central asia, then Pakistan can help us more than any other country can do.

By the way, BD govt has demanded to India to agree to a railway route to Pakistan through its land. It is all in the name of regional connectivity. This demand is additional to the routes India is considering for BD-Nepal/Bhutan connectivity. Even if we get the connectivity, then also we will need Pakistan to get us cotton.

I personally do not think, India will get a free connectivity to its NE. It will have to agree to our demands for connectivities to the three countries that I have mentioned. You will not like it when I say that this govt is doing much better to bring us out of our make-believe island world.

I think, to give India a route to Assam is a stupid thing when it is thought out independently. But, now the ball is in the court of India. It will have to give us the routes we are demanding. Otherwise, there will be a NO to its own connectivity with its NE - you can rest assured of it.

Please, lets not start this again, this has been discussed many times before. Individuals do not represent a country, sure you may have met a few Bangladeshis who were "pro India" if that's what you mean. I on the other hand have had the exact opposite experience. Anyways lets stay focused on the topic which is for "enhanced" Pak-Bangla relations. Not fighting over an event most of us here werent even born when it took place.

Bangalis do not have sweet memories during united Pakistan. Bangalis did not stab your back. Rather, it was you who stabbed us from all the sides. Bangalis became, in a sense, a second class citizens of their country for which they have struggled so much.

The Federal Capital was in the west. All three military HQs were in the west. Out of 300,000 troops in the then Pakistan Army, only less than 50,000 were from east. At the best of times, only 30 to 40% development money was spent in the east. I will have to write a 300 page book to say what happened before 1971.

And do not also forget about the unnecessary events of 1971. Purpose of all those indiscriment tortures and killings of innocent people was to subdue us and to accept you guys as our overlords.

A war was imposed on the unarmed people of east Pakistan. It was a ploy to make us permanent slaves of the west and make our women WHORES. But, somehow we managed to survive. Only Allah the Almighty knows under what circumstances we had to beg help from another country.

Allah said that He punishes him who exceeds limits. Did not you exceed your limits in 1971 or before? So, it was a punishment from Allah that you were defeated miserably and 90,000 of your troops were taken prisoners. So, do not ask silly question like why Bangalis do not like you. You should wake up to know the reality of 1971.

^At the same times, it is good to leave Bangladesh. For Pakistan, dealing in West & East are very difficult to manage since limit resources and money.

I think, this is the best time to improve BD-Pakistan relationship. In the Sub-continent personal and family relationships are very important. PM Gillani's father and Sk. Mujib were close. Mujib used to visit Gillani house when the PM was still a child. Pakistan PM has fond memories of Sk. Mujib. The latter would sat the then child on his lap, adore him and kiss him.

Now, Mujib's daughter is BD PM and Gillani himself is the PM of Pakistan. Same is true with the families of Z.A Bhutto/Benazir and Sk. Mujib. Benazir and Hasina kept in touch with each other after the demise of their fathers. Benazir is no more here, but her husband is the President of Pakistan. So, these relationships must be nurtured to bring the two countries closer.
