There has been a push from certain elements within the Muslim clergy within the Kerala state to make the age of consent for marriage for muslim women when they hit their puberty.

There has been a survey done by Ipsos that revealed 84% of Muslim women are against under 18 marriage.

majority (69%) of those who participated in the TOI-Ipsos survey said they were aware of under-18 marriages involving relatives or friends.

The same set of people opposed underage marriages and also disagreed to the tenet that attainting puberty makes a girl ready for marriage. While 75% of respondents in Kochi said that they knew girls who had tied the knot before 18, 69% in Thiruvananthapuram were aware of such marriages taking place.

In comparison, in Malappuram and Kozhikode only 69% and 66%, respectively, knew of underage marriages. While around 71% people in the older age group (35-50 years) knew women who got married before 18, 67% in the younger age group (16-25 years) said that they knew about underage marriages.

If the Indian government, and Kerala government can claim that it is secular, then they should oppose any move these people want to lower the age of marriage.

It is simply a move by these mullahs to restrict women from gaining an education and designing themselves a future for themselves.

Here is another aspect which affects Muslim women in Kerala.

BBC News - India's 'virtual widows' suffer as husbands seek work in the Gulf

In this non-descript village along the Malabar coast of the Arabian Sea, a group of women clap their hands and sing traditional folk songs in celebration around a teenage bride.

But once the celebrations are over, the new bride will join the ranks of many other teenage brides here who are condemned to lead a lonely life.

Most of the men in this Muslim-dominated region work in the Middle East and the most eligible groom is the one who has a job in one of the Gulf countries.

According to government estimates, almost 50% of men living in the Malabar region are working either in the United Arab Emirates or other Arab countries.

There are few job opportunities in Kerala and some estimates suggest unemployment in the state is three times the national average, which forces many young men to look to the Middle East for a livelihood

Says Shamsudheen K, a lawyer who is dealing with many divorce cases: "Times are changing and the old custom of getting girls married off at an early age is not working out. The girls don't want to live like widows."

Many of the girls also end up having affairs which lead to separations, he says.

India is a secular republic. When a religious community, whether it be Islam, Christianity or Hinduism infringes on the personal rights set by the Indian constitution, the Constitution must be upheld.

But I expect the government to have an elastic spine.

Dirty Vote bank politics by the so called secular run government.

Hindu communal dogs destroying the secular fabric of Kerala.

Such news will not be allowed to be posted here or tolerated. Down with all communal RSS chandi wala. :coffee:

What distresses me is that these women will be of course be denied an education for higher studies. Thus further insulating them from learning higher thinking.

And denying Women is the best way to ensure that your community will remain poor. But Hindus are to blame for that too right?

Right?

I don't really care about that, that much. What is happening is that there are people out there in Kerala, who are denied at having an education and living a more fulfilling life because of this so called 'culture' or religion.

And for what?

That was uncalled for

Actually it was.

Main thing is, the Indian constution has provided the citizens with some basic rights.

Under a secular government, those rights should be upheld

Not only muslim women but even hindu and Christians women suffer the same plight as most of their men work in gulf countries

Yep. Because the governments incometence in part has played a role.

Indian society as a whole is very misogynistic

It is a sad situation when policies are made for the sake of Votes and I dont see it ending soon.

They will get all the necessary education by reading the Quran. Nothing further is required. It is communal that Arabic is not taught as a compulsory subject in Kerala. If English can be a compulsory subject then Arabic too should be compulsory. It is such communal policies that is discriminating against the muslim community in Kerala.

Christian community is the Richest community in Kerala, followed by the Muslim community. Hindu community is the poorest community.

Hindus should adapt to christian and muslim customs so that they do not remain poor and pathetic.

Muslims are the largest beneficiaries of foreign remittances, that totalled Rs.50,000 crore in 2011 ........Hindus are nowhere near.

Muslims control Five Cabinet berths, have received free land in the Calicut University campus, special privileges for Muslim management schools and has minority scholarships in the community. Hindus in kerala can go suck an egg.

In Kerala Hindu and Christian populations showed a decline, by 1.48 per cent and 0.32 per cent respectively, the Muslim population went up by 1.70 per cent.

Birth rate among Christians in the state is around 1.2 only as against 1.4 among Hindus and 2.1 among Muslims.:D

Muslim population was 17 per cent of total population in 1961 and it grew to 24.6 per cent by 2001. By 2011 Muslim population in Kerala had grown to around 27 per cent. It is estimated that in 20 to 30 years, the Christian population will come down to 13% and the Muslim population will go up to 33%.

Already 5 more assembly seats were added to Muslim majority north malabar corresponding to similar reduction in seats from Travancore :D

So its better you stop worrying about Muslim girls and start worrying about Hindu women folks.

I worry about Hindu women too, because they are only slightly better off in the misogynisitic system we have.

India is still a long way off from gender equity

Nonsense. All Hindu women need to do is convert to islam to escape the evil Hindu society.

Muslims are the riches community in Kerala and on top of that they get scholarship from the state govt as a reward for being muslims.

Then there is love jihad and additional money and job incentives if they convert to islam.

In fact in the next 20 years conditions of women in keral will improve as the muslim population raises from 17% to 33 %. Your worry is clearly misguided fueled by your communal RSS chadi wala saffron agenda.

Eating beef if the first step to freeing women from this evil misogynistic society. After that comes encouraging cigarettes and alcohol for women. After than comes free sex and bikinis. Then pedophilia.

That is when kerala society becomes truly free from misogynistic tendencies. But with such enlightened mallus like you, I am sure it will happen fast. So when are you coming back from NZ to save us all ?

I like how you equated eating beef with pedophilia.

Did you know that in almost every country pedophilia is regarded as disgusting?

You know why? Because children lack the necessary mental faculties to form consent.

Besides, India has the most child brides and the one of the highest child sex trafficking.

You don't need beef eating for that.

If you are going to make the slippery slope argument, make it a slippery slope, not a logical cliff

All keralites should adapt Islam to live a better life :coffee:

kerala already has better living conditions than Pakistan.

Why would we convert?
