PLA Hong Kong conducts 1st sea & air joint patrol in 2011

In order to effectively fulfill the sea and air defense task in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China, the Hong Kong Garrison of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted this year’s first sea-air joint patrol on the morning of March 9.

According to relevant sources, the sea-air joint patrol mainly focused on monitoring, tracking, and identifying suspicious targets in the waters and airspace of the Hong Kong SAR, as well as timely dealing with emergencies.

During the operation, the PLA Hong Kong Garrison adopted multiple communication command systems like the “Beidou” satellite navigation and positioning system and the GPS to conduct remote dynamic command and control upon the patrol.

In view of its patrolling tasks, the garrison also carried out exercise on the subjects including near shore capturing and wiping out a handful of agents, tracking flights at low altitude above the sea, and point-blank reconnaissance, in a bid to test the ability of PLA Hong Kong Garrison in handling sea and air emergencies.

The patrolling exercise lasted for nearly 3 hours. Zhou Songhe, chief of staff of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison, said that during the operation, the navy, army, and air troops of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison properly coped with emergencies and accomplished all related tasks with flying colors through effective command and coordinated action.

It is learned that the PLA Hong Kong Garrison had taken the actual situation of Hong Kong waters and airspace into full account, notified relevant departments of the Hong Kong SAR government in advance, and strictly abided by related laws and regulations on waterway, port and aviation management during the patrol.
