Philippines to take in Syrian refugees

If i recollect, however, and as mentioned by one member, the Philippines did host the boat people from Vietnam on their route to the United States during the 1980s, yes? So there is a continuity in regards to the Philippines giving and offering a helpful hand.

Yes, but during those times, the Philippines was "better" in the sense that it has a stable infrastructure whereas today it needs to be repaired due to neglect.

And like Hu Songshan said, some of the Syrian refugees may have some extremist ideology with them, or worse, a few may not be "refugee" at all and taking advantage of the situation. We may woke up to a tomorrow where the worst of the insurgency in Mindanao reaches other places like Cebu and Manila.

Pertinent points, my friend. Pertinent. And you're right, we would not want to risk that.

Wao...cool!
Phi is really kind to them :)
But...How long will u Phi allow them to stay in Phi?And I think Phi is crowded, how can u find a place for them?..

Just let the US handle it. Do not take other peoples' "whoa, great Philippines" remarks as an indication of a sort of sincere feeling.

They will pat you on the back while they themselves will only care about their own selfish interests.

I just hope that they are not seriously considering this; while it may be a noble idea, realistically speaking, with many domestic issues left unresolved, we cannot simply add more to the current problem.

The Americans should do something about this, not us Filipinos because we have too many domestic problems and we cannot risk adding more.

I'm sure that at this point of their lives, they are not into our country's resources and luxurious life but rather wanting and seeing their love ones to continue living.

So yes let's accept and let them live here. Anyway they have the option to go back whenever they wanted.

Philippines to take in Syrian refugees

(The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines is ready to take in Syrian refugees in response to the humanitarian crisis in Europe, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said the Philippines could be a temporary destination as refugees await acceptance from a host country for resettlement.

Jose said the Philippines needs to assess its resources and capabilities before it can decide to take in people escaping from war-torn nations.

“While we will abide by our commitments as a signatory to the UN Convention on refugees, we should also take into account our own resources and capabilities, considering we are still in the rehabilitation stage from the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda,” Jose said.

The head of the United Nations refugee agency is urging the European Union (EU) to accept up to 200,000 asylum-seekers fleeing the conflict zones in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hundreds of thousands of people are risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Europe.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres said the largest influx of refugees into Europe for decades requires a “massive common effort” and a break from the current fragmented approach, which he said has failed to find an effective common response.

“The issue should be addressed at its source, so the international community could help the countries from where these refugees are coming,” Jose said.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said the shocking images of children on the shores of Europe must be matched by action as the migrant and refugee crisis in the region deepens.

In June, the Philippines expressed willingness to share with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member-states, who would take in Bangladeshi and ethnic Rohingya migrants, its best practices in the processing of refugees and managing workers’ deployment.

The DFA said this was discussed during the special meeting on irregular migration in the Indian Ocean held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Philippines attended the meeting in solidarity with ASEAN.

The Philippine delegation, composed of officials from the DFA and the Department of Justice (DOJ), participated in the meeting on Rohingya refugees.
There are reasons for laws that prohibit illegal migrants from entering another country, reasons that are of political, legal and security risk that the Philippines can poorly afford. With the unpopularity of the Bangsamoro Basic Law, the rampant Muslim extremist group, and the recruitment operations of ISIS.

I know these are desperate and helpless people. Anyway we can show compassion by helping them, providing them with TEMPORARY shelters, food, clothes, etc. We can open a Transit Refugee Center so they can stay temporarily and get medical help then coordinate with our richer friends and allies who can accommodate them on a long term basis. We did this during the Vietnam War when we took in thousands of people before sending them to US and other countries. But to say letting them live in our land indefinitely is another thing.

No worries Mate

Well there is a way around this.. What i'm suggesting may look xenophobic or anti Muslim to those who would look at it through the victim hood glasses, But Those people irrespective of their beliefs need to be helped rescued

But as all countries that are signatories to the refugee convention there need to be a solid whetting system.. Because already the likes of ISIS and other Islamic terror groups and fundamentalists have proclaimed they're plans to infiltrate Western democracies and elsewhere.. So the priorities should be thus

1. Christian and other religious minority Syrians, The most affected community under threat
2. Woman and Children
3. Those with families
4. Shia's provided they're cleared by intelligence

No country should be advisable to host tens and thousands of Sunni Muslim single men, It's going to be a ticking bomb

The Filipino government needs to rethink this.. It's not like hosting Vietnamese refugees or Chinese.. They're already fighting a Islamic insurgency in their territory .. Will they want to take that risk ?

You're right. These refugees, especially susceptible population such as women, children and elderly, should be given and granted amnesty and entrance into peaceful host countries. Right now, these susceptible population groups require physiological safety, a sense of safety and belonging, and self actualization. As per Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs.

Too right. What most of these asshole forgot is that Refugee have rights.

As an ally and former colony of the US,the Philippines is duty-bound to take in thousands,if not tens of thousands,of refugees。

After all,the current refugee crisis is a direct consequence of the US‘ Middle East policies。

Every US ally,in particular Japan, and those countries which consider themselves a US ally in waiting, should come out and offer to accept refugees in the hundreds of thousands every year for at least the next 10 years。

It is only fair。

should PN ask for arm equipment or finance from US in exchange for her kind acceptance of refugees?

The Jihadists in the south are happily to accept them.

To be honest, Filipinos should be very careful dealing with these refugees. Letting a bunch of young single males with an extremist ideology, high demands but no job skills, language skills or money into your country is a recipie for disaster. Remember that 75% of the refugees are single males.
