Awareness Hike held to promote peace and harmony
Gilgit: The Ismaili District Boy Scouts Association Gilgit organized a ‘Regional Awareness Hike’ to promote peace and harmony among the diversified communities of GB, as well as to raise awareness about deforestation and its impact on environment. On September 4-6, 2015 a total 95 scouts including leaders participated in the activity. The hike was held from Astore to Rama, a picturesque tourist resort.
The aims of the hike were to educate people about the importance environment and role of forest in biodiversity; encourage youth and their role to play active role as members of society to save environment and forests; Provide platform to youth of the region for enhanced coordination and communicate across the communities in the region, and, to promote peace and harmony among communities of the region.
A peace rally was also held from Center Astore to Rama. The theme of the rally was “Peace through Scouting”. During hike Scouts were provided more than 300 hundred pine trees by forest department and then the hikers in their respective patrols planted trees at allocated places.
Scouts had an adventure trial in which scouts participated whole heatedly and fully enjoyed the activity. After that scouts had their lunch followed by cleanliness activity of the residing vicinity. Solid waste of surrounding collected and disposed according to environmental techniques.
Divisional Forest officer Astore Mr. Saleem Ullah expressed his view regarding the activity. The chief guest appreciated the endeavors of the scouts for sustainable use of natural resources and to create awareness among scouts in particular and communities in general. He said the civil society like scouts and other organization can play a pivotal role to promote peace and harmony in Gilgit-Baltistan and in the entire country as well. He expressed his immense pleasure to participate in the event and declare it one of the memorable events of his life and said he will always remember the event. In his speech he extended all out his support in order to enhance a healthy society through any sort of activity in the days to come.

Promoting Volunteerism: PRCS GB organizes youth camp at Rama, Astore Valley
Gilgit: The Pakistan Red Crescent Society’s (PRCS) Gilgit-Baltistan provincial branch organized a six-day long Provincial Youth and Volunteer Camp at Rama, a picturesque tourist resort located in Astore District. The camp, themed “Young, Global and Active”, continued from 27th to 31st of August.
The camp was attended by 40 male and female volunteers representing all districts of Gilgit-Baltistan which was aimed at to engage youth in positive activities and to promote the spirit of volunteerism among them.
Participants of the camp have been taught about the global Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, its Fundamental Principles, Disaster Management, First Aid, Emergency Response and Youth and Volunteering followed by an international standard training module along with practical exercises of all sessions.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, PRC GB Chairman Muhammad Wali said that volunteerism is the true spirit of Islam quoting the holy verse of Quran “He who saved one life-it is as if he had saved mankind entirely”.
He said that the Pakistan Red Crescent has been working to promote volunteerism among the youth so that they could be able to help the helpless during disasters and other emergencies across the country as the organization itself is a voluntary relief society acting as an auxiliary body to the government in humanitarian services.
“Gilgit-Baltistan being a disaster prone area needs a trained volunteer crop to cope with disasters and emergencies hence for the PRC stresses on capacity building of community volunteers” said the Chairman.
“Pakistan Red Crescent Gilgit-Baltistan chapter has more than 17000 registered volunteers out which 5000 have been trained in various fields including disaster management” said PRC Provincial Secretary Noo-ul-Ain while addressing to the closing ceremony.
She said that the PRC GB chapter has played an active role in providing relief to the victims of recent floods across Gilgit-Baltistan with the help of its selfless volunteers and this humanitarian journey to be continued followed by the mandate and Fundamental Principles of the global Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.
Noor urged the participants to disseminate the mission and spirit of volunteerism among the youth at community level so that maximum people to be benefited from services of the organization.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Astore Umer Sher Chatta, Director Education Gilgit region Majeed Khan and other officials have visited the PRC youth camp and escalated the camp activities.

Workshop on High Mountain Value Chains held in Danyore
Gilgit, September 11: WWF-Pakistan jointly with Local Support Organization (LSO) Danyore organized a two-day training workshop on “High mountain horticultural Value Chains – production, processing/value addition and business skills” for the local young farmers of Danyore valley under the framework of UNDP-Coca cola funded New World project titled “
Enhancing value of hydrological resources for livelihood,youth employability and Climate resilience in Gilgit-Baltistan” at Danyore (Gilgit) on September 5-6, 2015. The purpose of the training was to impart latest knowledge and skill to local young farmers about modern production, processing and marketing techniques and technologies for food security, employability and income generation.
Some 60 farmers, mostly male and female youth from the locale participated in the workshop and benefited from the training course. WWF team including Mr. Shahid Ali, Zahida and Noorani and the Value Chain experts, Mr. Shahid Karim and Anwar Ali, facilitated theoretical and practical sessions of the course.
Primary objective of the workshop was to improve knowledge, understanding and skill of local farmers, particularly youth in production technologies, food processing and marketing of high mountain agriculture produces like apple, apricot, sea buckthorn, cherry, potato and strawberry. According to Dr. Babar Khan, Head WWF-Pakistan regional Office Gilgit, GB is home to nearly 1.8 million people, of whom more than 80% are poor agro-pastoralists depending on mountain farming and livestock herding for their livelihood. The agriculture development in GB needs to be modernized through improved but nature friendly better farming and processing technologies and value chains. Participants were given certificates at the end of workshop.
