Pakistani born astrophysicist one of key people who detected gravitational waves

This is a popular Indian myth that Muslim Pakistanis don't appreciate their non-Muslim counterparts.

Now, if Indians started appreciating their minorities on the other hand...
The Indian myth is derived from the facts of dwindling minority population and how Pakistan treated Dr. Abdus Salam. We have seen the coments of Pakistanis on their nobel laureates Malala Yusufzai and Dr. Abdul Salam. But its a pleasant change to see their reactions on Nergis Mavalwala.

Nergis Mavalvala MIT - Pakistani born astrophysicist one of key people who detected gravitational waves.

Nergis Mavalvala is a Pakistani-born astrophysicist , A Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is one of the key people who detected gravitational waves.

In 1916 – Albert Einstein predicts gravitational waves exist as a consequence of the theory of general relativity.
Gravitational waves give us another way to observe space. These waves could tell us a little more about how the universe formed. So detecting these waves would give us a new new insight into the cosmic events that produced them.

Finally, gravitational waves could also help physicists understand the fundamental laws of the universe. They are, in fact, a crucial part of Einstein's general theory of relativity

This Pakistani Born is Part of LIGO Team that Discovered Gravitational Waves!

By now you must be aware of the ground breaking discovery of gravitational waves made by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). The announcement, made yesterday, has been called one of the most significant scientific advances of the modern era. And a Pakistani born scientist is among the team that made this breakthrough discovery.

Dr. Nergis Mavalvala, a professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was born in Karachi and immigrated to the US as a teenager. After getting a B.A. in Physics and Astronomy from Wellesley College in 1990, she went on to receive her Ph.D. in Physics from MIT in 1997. A brief stint as a research scientist at Caltech was followed by her joining the Physics faculty at MIT in 2002.

Her work on gravitational waves was part of her research in graduate school at MIT, where she now is an associate department head of Physics. She credits her success to a host of mentors from the chemistry teacher in Pakistan who let her play with reagents in the lab after school to the head of the physics department at MIT, who supported her work when she joined the faculty in 2002.

What a day it will be when we learn to control gravity just like sound, light, and other things. Maybe even time down the road. Then generation of that era will look back and wonder what was considered so silly about time travel movies.

Made us as humanity proud, Ms. Nergis.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has felicitated Nergis Mavalvala, the Pakistani-American Astrophysicist for being part of the team of scientists who have recently detected gravitational waves in space.

In a statement on Monday, the prime minister said Mavalvala was a source of inspiration for Pakistani scientists and students aspiring to become future scientists.

The entire nation is proud of her valuable contribution, the prime minister added.

PM Nawaz has directed Ministry of Science and Technology to devise a framework within a span of one week to facilitate Pakistani scientists in their scientific pursuits.

The detection – announced only on Thursday – confirms a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 general theory of relativity and opens an unprecedented new window onto the cosmos.

Stephen Hawking has congratulated the team behind the detection of gravitational waves - direct evidence for one of Einstein's wildest predictions.

Gravitational waves, which were discovered by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) team, ripple through the universe, squeezing and stretching spacetime.

Physicists around the world detected signals of gravitational waves emanating from the collision of two massive black holes 1.5 billion light years away.

Posting on Facebook,
Professor Hawking Said: Professor Hawking Said: "It is thrilling to see predictions I made over 40 years ago such as the black hole area and uniqueness theorems being observed within my lifetime."

My congratulations to the LIGO team on their discovery of gravitational waves. It is a result that is at least as important as the discovery of the Higgs Boson. It includes the first observation of gravitational waves, and of two black holes colliding and merging. With LIGO's increased sensitivity, we can expect many more detections, all improving our knowledge about how the universe works.

These experimental observations are consistent with my theoretical work on black holes in the 1970s. As a theoretical physicist, I have spent my life contributing to our understanding of the universe. It is thrilling to see predictions I made over 40 years ago such as the black hole area and uniqueness theorems being observed within my lifetime. -SH

Gravitational waves were first predicted by Einstein 100 years ago, but had previousy never been directly observed.

One senior British physiist described the breakthrough as the greatest scientific discovery so far this century.

Studying the waves could offer an insight into the early universe and possibly allow for new ways of observing the hidden regions of space.

Great achievement, but it were the US Educational Institutions and the US R&D Dollars that were provided for her to achieve her goals. So US is still fair and a land of opportunities. We always tend to overlook that. On the other hand she had her solid education in Pakistan to build her base and is a smart person. So 2 positives remain positive as per algebra.
