Pakistan wants to rebuild ties with the U.S, says Gilani

Shamsi air base will be vacated on time: Munter

ISLAMABAD: US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter said Monday that the Shamsi air base would be vacated on time, Geo News reported.

In an interview Munter admitted that the US was vacating the Shamsi air base.

Munter added that the investigation into the Nato attack was underway and Pakistan would be informed of the findings.

"Action will be taken against those responsible for the attack," Munter said.

Commenting on recent statements made by Mansoor Ijaz, Munter said these were false.

The Defence Committee had set a fifteen day deadline for the US to vacate the Shamsi air base following the Nato attack on check posts in the Mohmand Agency.

Pakistan had also decided to boycott the Bonn Conference and stop Nato supplies following the attack.

You can laugh, but Pakistan is a key nation in the future development of Afghanistan, 90 nations attended the Conference so just because it looks busy and crowded doesn't mean anything for the future of Afghanistan. I can say easily the presence of 85 of those 90 nations is insignificant.

In fact many of those people standing around talking probably aren't even talking about Afghanistan, Taliban, administrative rule, NATO involvement, opium crops, feudalism, corruption, education, security, and other factors that have to be resolved in AFG in order to stabilize.

Don't be so impressed by such a photo and draw a false conclusion.

Exactly.

Now, what is the influence of Brazil, Japan, Belgium, Croatia etc?

They don't even talk about the real issues being faced by the Afghans.

.
We have already put too much food in that pressure cooker, and it might be difficult to take it out, although the evaluation is already done.

So Good as long as Pakistan is getting into this with its eyes open.. :)

what ever you say, this is a dark day for pak patriots.

I will give you an idea,

(1) cease the relationships with US , slowly and strongly.

(2) go to Saudi Arabia and offer the nuke and other military technology in exchange for cheap oil for life long and other strong business relations.

Saudi Arabia is desperate for Nuke and will do anything to get it now, since Iran surely is going to make Nuke in near future .pak can bargain anything that she wishes, because it is the only country in the world with a slight possibility to give Nuke technology to Saudi.no other will do. so when you ask, ask the core.

(3) resolve all deputes with the neighbors. especially India and increase trade with India.

(4)Increase all type of trade with Iran irrespective of all pressures from the world . Iran will be very much happy to have a strong growing economic partner like the pak ( growth will be from the cheap oil from Saudi and large young human resource.Iran will love to have an open emerging market with a population of 180 million.)

(5) keep a firm 2 way relation with China, like 'we need you , only if you need us' . don't worry China will be more close to you once you break relations with US.( you don't have to break relationship with US . US will do it herself when you give Nuke to Saudi and increase friendship with Iran.)
any way by cheap oil from Saudi the industrial production cost can be very much reduced and increase trade with China.
and even compete with China.

(6) Do the Nuke deal as a covert operation. You have ISI for that. Any way US and Israel will sniff it out. just deny the deal.
there will be gigantic discussions around the world, there will be great pressure from Europe. just deny.

(7)within the time , Iran will be having Nuke, since Saudi is having Nuke, Iran will think twice before crossing the Persian gulf .
and there will be great stability in ME.

(8)so by this time pak should reach in a position to control both this powers, by military cooperation on one side and economic cooperation on the other side.

(9)close the Afghan border tight or deploy more soldiers in the Afghan border.( since pak have reached in good terms with India, it can concentrate more on its northern border)

justifications: (1) even though it will be a great blow for US by losing a good base in the subcontinent ,US cannot do much.

(2) the oil from saudi and the trade between India, China , saudi and Iran. keep the pak economy healthy.

(3)Us will not go for a military action because of the presence of plenty Nukes in the area.

In short Pakistan will flourish, we Indians will have peace. in a calm environment we can reduce the military budget and use the money for other productive purposes., Iran and Saudi will act as balancing powers in ME .

not but the least, US will lose her hold in the subcontinent. US still will be in Afghan. but you know the policy . close the border tight.

Its amazing to read comments here. On one hand, the Indians are here egging on Pakistani ghairat (the ulterior motives are quite clear), and on the other side some on the Pakistani side are taking the calls to do "maatam" verbatim and crying foul over Gillani's statement.

The reality is that Pakistan and the US have to go on. There is no denying this. We are in a unipolar World. Either we find another power to align with or become a power unto ourselves, besides these options there are no alternates but to deal with the United States. And if we have to deal with the United States then we should work out the modalities with the Americans for an understanding that is appropriate for all sides. So I am not sure why Gillani's statements are being made out to be something so unusual? If anything they are quite sane.

If relations with India approve, #9 becomes a non-issue. Pakistan's security paradigm is focused on the threat from India. If we remove this one single variable, by means of a lasting understanding etc., then Pakistan's current stance, or lack thereof on Afghanistan becomes obsolete.

Secondly, why should Pakistan sell its nuclear know-how to anyone given the level of heat the country has already taken?

He also made following statement

All accords with US and Nato to be reviewed: PM
LAHORE, Dec 4: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Sunday that his government had decided to review the agreements made by the government of president Pervez Musharraf with the United States, Nato, Isaf and the United Nations.

Talking to representatives of print media at the State Guest House, he said: `Soon after the Nato attack, which left many of our innocent soldiers martyred, we took up this issue very seriously by involving all stakeholders, including military and political leadership. We first started protesting massively both at national and international levels by boycotting the Bonn conference in order to make the world realise that Pakistan has an important role in the war against terror.

Mr Gilani said the political and military leadership, along with the Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC), saw the strike as an opportunity to revise the entire terms of business (ToBs) on all national and international issues such as war on terror, security of the region, Kashmir, made by the Musharraf government with the US, Nato, ISAF and the UN. He said the government had assigned the National Security Committee of Parliament (NSCP) to pre-pare its recommendations over all important matter and submit these to the next joint session of parliament.

`After having the NSCP`s recommendations debated in parliament we will make new ToBs with the US, Nato and the UN so as to bring a sustainable peace in the region, he said.

Mr Gilani said the main objective behind boycotting the Bonn conference was not only limited to a strong protest, but also to devise afresh a uniformed policy to deal with national issues.

Asked whether the government`s decision to boycott the Bonn conference might harm the peace process in Afghanistan, the prime minister said: `Everyone knows well that we decided not to attend the Bonn conference in protest. As we are already doing a lot to bring peace in the region, including Afghanistan, my nation questions me that why our innocent soldiers were martyred by Nato.

Pakistan’s absence at Bonn Conference is unfortunate: Clinton--- Pakistan

And as for as relations with US are concern they have to be rebuild but after a complete review of terms of engagement.. Being a part of world Pakistan must play its role for peace process and for this relations with US are very important as we all know US is so-called torch bearer of peace... Whats wrong with it?

Can you see that " may " or may have " word in the headlines ? ... It means that there was a slight probability of Pakistan reversing its decision ... The journalist were purely speculating after the Obama called the PM but we all know Pakistan still didn't participate the Bonn conference ... And just to take you out of denial mode , the conference has already ended ... So there's no way Pakistan can attend it now ...

I simply dont know how do you people always believe conspiracy theories when solid , credible facts are present ! :hitwall:

at the very most, govt. may send minders or observers to take notes and (as the name entails) ''observe'' the deliberations and discussion

i dont think most people even think much will come out of this conference.......the way some people here are hyping this event, theyre acting as if once the people leave the conference suddenly there would be a solution to the conflict

the fact of the matter is, i see no paradigm shift since the taleban seem adamant to any real sustainable peace talks until the foreign forces withdraw.....and given that the taleban do hold considerable influence over parts of the country (and according to NATO, Pakistan and Afghan govt itself) peace talks and reconciliation with elements of the taleban are crucial

Pakistan's absence is obviously a conspicuous one, but then again that was the idea. Hence the boycott. Pakistani public and military are still infuriated over the attack on 2 dozen Pakistani soldiers who were killed by 'friendlys' in the line of duty --on the frontline --for no reason at all. An act of callousness and aggression which they must know is unacceptable and wont be tolerated.

Unless you invite the Taliban perspective in this, there is no solution.

This conference cannot yield much , except for statements.

There will still be no stability if the game continues to be played as it is.

.
May be its time for Pakistan to evaluate if this is really a good thing..

The re-evaluation must be of what to control the "gas supply" to. Do we want a pressure cooker that will burst or something less explosive and predictable.
It is good to have influence , as long as that influence doesn't come to back you in the bum.
