Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has directed to provide foolproof security to T20 matches of Pakistan and Sri Lankan cricket teams in Lahore and added that line departments should perform their duties in a coordinated manner. Similarly, all other arrangements should be high quality, he added.

The Chief Minister was presiding over a high-level meeting at his office on Wednesday to review security arrangements. A briefing was given about match arrangements and security plan and the chief minister was told that 13416 police and security officials will be deputed for security. Nine parking areas have been earmarked for the events and 68 shuttle buses will be available to take cricket enthusiasts to the stadium.

Usman Buzdar said that shuttle buses will provide pick and drop facility and both the teams will be provided box security. All-out arrangements will be made for peaceful holding of the matches, he added. The chief minister also directed to make best arrangements inside and outside of the stadium and assured that Punjab government will extend every possible cooperation to the Pakistan Cricket Board.

He directed the cabinet committee on law & order to regularly review security arrangements. The visitors will be provided with the best possible facilities and peaceful holding of matches will be ensured, he added. He said that conduction of matches in a peaceful atmosphere is the matter of national dignity and no compromise will be made on it. Duties will have to be performed vigilantly to foil the nefarious designs of the wicked enemy, said Usman Buzdar.

He further directed to follow traffic plan in letter & spirit and added that citizens should not face any difficulty in this regard. Traffic would be temporarily stopped for the movement of teams so that citizens may not face any difficulty. The people should also be regularly informed about alternate traffic arrangements, he added. The chief minister said that suitable arrangements should be made to provide meals to the duty staff and cleanliness arrangements should also be the best. He hoped that cricket lovers will enjoy the best play in a peaceful atmosphere.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: 5 takeaways from an unremarkable home assignment

Pakistan on Wednesday defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets in the third and final ODI in Karachi, claiming the series 2-0 (the first match was washed out).

Here are our five takeaways from the series.

Something’s amiss

Pakistan’s first ODI home series in a while failed to get the hype going.

It may have something to do with scant attendance, mediocre production quality, one-sided matches or maybe even the same old commentary box voices we have been hearing year in, year out. Whatever it is, it is clear that there is something missing.

On TV, Pakistan’s away assignments, especially in England, Australia and South Africa seem enticing and worth taking out time for. Even if the team’s taking a hammering, you do not want to miss the cricketing action as a fan. But come home and everything looks a bit dull and monotonous.

The way cricket is presented locally needs a rethink and revamp.

Bring on the big guns
Sure, we’ve had Zimbabwe, the West Indies, the PSL and now the Lankans playing in Pakistan. But with all due respect, none of these were elite sides even at full strength.

We’re profoundly grateful to all those who've toured, but the next step of bringing cricket home should have our cricket board wooing a true top team that is also not missing any key players.

Let’s bring on Australia or the likes.

Not good enough for World Cup, but still good enough

And now to playing matters: barring the 1st ODI, the series played out as expected. The batsmen generally played well, the bowlers did okay and the fielders only dropped catches they always drop.

The one thing that many did not expect in the script was the strong showing by those who were deemed not good enough to be taken to the World Cup. Abid Ali, Usman Shinwari and Iftikhar Ahmed all impressed, with the former two bagging player-of-the-match awards too.

More of Abid Ali please

Speaking of Abid, his breezy 74 was a joy to watch in the third ODI.

Even when Fakhar Zaman and Imamul Haq do click, their knocks are not easy on the eyes, primarily because of the former’s awkward technique and the latter not being a natural stroke-maker.

But Abid is all natural. He has his strengths and perfected shots, and if the bowlers don’t respect those, they get punished instantly.

This one should be given more than just a consolation game here and there.

Sarfaraz's promotion up the ranks fails

One of the first major changes Misbahul Haq rang in his debut series as coach was to promote Sarfaraz Ahmed from lower order to middle.

The experiment does not seem to have worked.

The skipper returned scores of 8 and 23 in his twin outings on completely flat tracks. Anyone with limbs and eyes could have averaged 15.5 runs on these surfaces. Better was expected from him.

Pakistan take on Sri Lanka in possibly the biggest T20I mismatch

Pakistan’s T20I record against Sri Lanka is even more dominant than their ODI record. It’s actually not even close.

The two teams first played each other in a 20-over international in 2007. Since then, the Lankans have beaten the Greenshirts just five times in T20I matches.

Pakistan, on the other hand, have 13 victories against Sri Lanka, giving them a whopping 72 per cent winning ratio against the islanders.

Sri Lanka have famously lost several key players to retirement in the last few years and thus been reduced to a shell of their former self. Their decline does not get more evident than in their T20I record against Pakistan.

Head-to-head record

The Sri Lankans have not beaten Pakistan in T20I cricket since 2013. Yes, you read that right.

On Dec 13, 2015, roughly six years ago, Sri Lanka beat a Mohammad Hafeez-led Pakistan by 24 runs in Dubai. Since then the two teams have played six T20Is and Pakistan have won each and every one of them.

So you take a side that has been dominated and then take out a bunch of regulars from it and throw it to their tormentors in their own backyard. What do you get? An annihilation, a beat down, a blowout defeat?

On paper, yes. But like all sports, cricket is not played on paper and in theories. There are still professional athletes out there who have been trained all their lives to play cricket at the highest level.

Besides, the 20-over format in nature is such that all you need is a few short bursts of brilliance and the victory is yours. Question is, do Sri Lanka have enough firepower to do even that?

A look at their rosters for tonight’s first T20I in Lahore answers that question. The side is overrun with unheard-of Fernandos and Pereras. The only familiar names are Jayasuriya and Rajapaksa but the former is not Sanath and the latter is not the former president.

Want more proof that this is a mismatch? Pakistan are the number one T20I side in the world. Sri Lanka are eighth. Pakistan have the number-one ranked T20I batsman in Babar Azam. Sri Lanka have who?

Prediction

There is a massive gulf of ability between the two sides. And Pakistan, even with Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad trying to balance things out, would likely prove too strong for the tourists.

In the second ODI, when they’re more used to the Gaddafi Stadium conditions; or when the situation necessities them to; or when the hosts drop their guards a bit, they are more likely to pull off a win.

In the opener, they only have a puncher’s chance. Barring Sri Lanka pulling off a Buster Douglas, Pakistan should have this one in the bag.

Very poor show against young inexperienced sri lankan team. Its not how no 1 rank team should play on their home grounds. They were chasing 165 like losers i.e hardly played any aggressive shots to put pressure on sri lankan bolwers..Srafraz is always defensive and useless shazad and akmal proved again that they will not perform No matter if you give them 100 chances

.
bloody misbah is getting 28 lac per month for the sh*t he is doing.pathetic bowling from pakistan and hopefully batting will also be pathetic.

. . . .
Its third successive t20 series loss for Pakistan and first ever t20 series win for sri Lanka against Pakistan. Not a good sign before t20 world cup starting next year..objectionable slection and totla captain brought cricket at home with defeat against third tier sri lankan team

.
Ok look. Get rid of Umer Akmal and Ahmad Shazad while you still can. They are destroying the team balance and we did extremely well without them. Umar Akmal has been given so many chances. I dont know what Pakistani selectors think he will do.

.
Not a single dependable bowler. All of them overrated and underperforming. & to think many of them were actually selected on the basis of their T20 performances in PSL. Streetsmart cricket is no longer viable. We need to improve the school, college and university level cricket like the Indians and farm new players from there.
