ISLAMABAD: Three Pakistani ships arrived at the Port of Jubail in Saudi Arabia on Saturday to participate in the joint tri-services Exercise Gulf Shield-1, which has been organized by the Royal Saudi Arabian Armed Forces.
Headed by the commander of the 25th Destroyer Squadron, Cmdr. Mohammed Faisal Abbasi, the arrival of the ships — Tippu Sultan, Himmat and Basol — is seen as an effort to further strengthen the defense collaboration between the two countries.
Elements from the Pakistan Navy’s Special Service Group and Pakistan Marines are also participating in the exercise, alongside a Long Range Maritime Patrol P3C aircraft.
The naval component of Exercise Gulf Shield-1 is hosted by the Royal Saudi Naval Forces and will be conducted in Saudi waters in the Arabian Gulf.
Various activities involving joint operational planning, training, demonstrations, seminars on professional topics, and cultural events will be conducted in the harbor phase of the exercise, with the aim of mutually benefiting the participants and generating goodwill.
Irregular warfare, coastal defense, combat search and rescue, naval warfare exercises and extensive flying operations will also be conducted during the sea phase of the exercise.
Observers from various participating countries will board Pakistan Navy ships during the sea phase. Warships from Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, the UAE and US will also participate.
Pakistan is the leading contributor to Gulf Shield-1, both in terms of personnel and assets, which is reflective of the strong bilateral defense relations between Islamabad and Riyadh.
The exercise is expected to further strengthen the existing bonds between the participant nations and demonstrate their resolve for ensuring maritime security in the region.
