A Pakistani navy ship has docked at the Jeddah Islamic port on Sunday on a goodwill and training visit.
“PNS Shahjahan arrived at the Jeddah Islamic Port and will dock until Wednesday, hosting members from the Pakistani community and naval cadets from the Saudi Arabian royal navy and other friendly countries,” said Suhail Ali Khan, an official at the Pakistani consulate, adding, “The visit will help enhance the skills and expertise of naval trainees as well as foster a bond of friendship amongst the two countries.”
A reception was held for journalists and dignitaries to visit the ship on Monday.
Captain Irfan Taj, commander of the ship, welcomed the guests on board and gave them an overview of the goodwill mission.
“This naval ship’s goodwill visit is part of a routine cruise which normally takes place every 2 months. The main aim of the visit is to foster strong ties and facilitate the Saudi Navy with training and to engage extensively with the Royal Saudi Naval Force during their three-day stay here,” he said.
Taj explained that the Pakistani Navy has been on a goodwill mission for the past 3 months, collaborating with maritime partners to keep an eye on drug and human trafficking, pirating and other illegal activities in the Indian Ocean.
“The Pakistani Navy, in addition to Cooperative Maritime Security, is also undertaking independent operations to protect its flag carriers plying in the Indian Ocean,” he said.
He briefed officials on the combat management system, torpedoes and oceanographic technologies available on board the PNS Shahjahan.
Aftab A. Khokhar, the Pakistani consul general, highly praised the relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, highlighting the time-tested and deeply rooted ties that bond the two nations.
“The relationship between the navies of the two countries are based on lasting bonds and a brotherly relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which are not based on political expediency; rather they are etched deep in the heart of every Pakistani and Saudi national. We care about each other more in practice than in words,” said Khokhar.
Fahad Al Sabyani, deputy commander of the western fleet of the Royal Navy Commodore, in addition to the consul generals of different countries, diplomats, dignitaries, officers from the Saudi navy and a large number of community members, were also present on the occasion.
PNS Shahjahan is fitted with state-of-the art weapons and sensors. The type 21 frigate is an important naval ship, which was commissioned on Sept. 23 1994. It has participated in many naval programs and exercises with alacrity, in addition to representing the Pakistani navy in Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan (CMCP) in 2004 and 2005.
The ship derives its name after Shahjahan, the third son of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, and is the third ship to bear the name.
