BBC News - Pakistan media gripped by man marrying twice in one day

A Pakistani man's solution to the age-old dilemma of whether to embark on an arranged or a love marriage has captivated the country's media.

Television channels have provided live coverage of Azhar Haidri's decision to marry both women over a 24-hour period.

At first he refused to marry the woman selected by his family since childhood because he loved someone else.

Pakistani law allows polygamy because it interprets Islam to allow a man to have up to four wives.

Islam is the main religion in the country.

Men who take multiple wives usually do so after a period of several years - and must get approval from their first wife prior to a second marriage.

Correspondents say that while it is not unusual for men in Pakistan to have several wives, it is rare for two weddings to take place almost simultaneously under the full glare of the media.
'Lucky'

Several Pakistani television stations have carried the nuptials live - on Sunday and Monday - because of the unique circumstances.
Songs during Mr Haidri's first wedding Celebrations ran late into the night during Mr Haidri's first wedding to Humaira Qasim

Mr Haidri's love for 21-year-old Rumana Aslam - ahead of 28-year-old Humaira Qasim - at one point threatened to split his family apart.

"I gave this offer that I will marry both of them," Mr Haidri, 23, told the Associated Press ahead of his first marriage to Ms Qasim on Sunday in the central Pakistani city of Multan. "Both the girls agreed."

He is scheduled to marry Ms Aslam on Monday.

Both women appear to have given their consent to the compromise and say they plan to live as sisters and friends.

"I am happy that we both love the same man," Ms Aslam told AP.

Mr Haidri, a herbal medicine practitioner, counts himself lucky.

"It is also very rare that two women are happily agreeing to marry one man," he said.

I personally have no issues with this event, however I would like to know the opinions of fellow (sane) members here. trolls (indians and others) will be immediately reported.

I don't get why its a big deal he couldn't make up his mind both the women agreed so married them both and all parties are happy best of luck to them atleast he did the the right thing by giving them both rights as his wives.

Islamic instructions about multiple weddings are clear. For example, Surat al-Nisaa’ in ayat 3, which has a meaning that can be translated as:
“… marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if you fear that you will not be able to deal justly (with them) then only one…” (4:3

This means 1-1 relationship is preferred over multiple-spouse relationship. More than one wife is allowed only for exceptional circumstances.

In male-dominated socities, people clearly misuse Islamic injunctions by going for second/third/fourth marriage just to enhance their social status like many wealthy Arabs do.

i think he is an idiot, a fool and should be made to feel as one.

Not a big deal as is projected by the media. I guess the only fact being that both the marriages are on the same day. Good luck to this guy...

Ek to hum logon se sambhala nahin jaata do leke kya khaak jiyengey...

How many of Pakistani posters here would like to marry their daughters / sisters to men knowing fully that she would be his third or fourth wife?

Similarly, I would like to know form Pakistani ladies on this forum if they would have no objection to being the 4th wife to a man possibly about their Dads age ?

In Saudi Arabia two three or four wives is status symbol:D

Person having one wife is considered Maskeen (Poor)

Islam allow four marriages but with condition of justice

1) This dude didn't have balls to stand up to his family and reject the girl they selected for him when he was a child, he shouldn't be marrying any woman.

2) Why is the family of girl insisting on marrying their daughter to this guy knowing fully well that he is in love with the other girl?

3) How can he treat both wives equally, when he is in love with only one and is marrying the other girl only as a "compromise" solution?

What a joke :hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

See first year *** with 2 different girls not a bad idea till reality of life comes in picture. The problem is with wife when both wants to have *** same day.

The indian jumping to conclusion should review history of Tipu Sultan who did the same!
