Pakistan marks one year since Sri Lanka attacks

It was probably one of the darkest days in Pakistan history.

Our faith, our culture, and our upbringing and values in a large sense revolve around hospitality and care for our guests.

Sri Lankan cricket team were our respected guests. Thank God they were safe in the end, but we failed to protect them from danger.

It was a sad, yet educational day. I hope the police and also civilians have learned the lessons from that day. We are happy that the brave and resilient Sri Lankans understood our situation and still gave support to cricket and travel to Pakistan.

as I have said on many Sri Lankan-related threads, Pakistan congratulates Sri Lanka for succesful annihilation of LTTE/tamil tiger group. Pray also for our our inevitable victory also against enemies of Pakistan.

We will see when Lankans travel next to Pakistan for cricket.

When India decided not to tour Pakistan, Mr.Arjuna Rantunga was all over the media (with his hatred and bias against India) that SL team will visit Pakistan instead.

BCCI asked politely SL Cricket authorities on not visiting Pakistan. BCCI even arranged T20 and ODI series in Lanka.

But there is no cure for certain prejudice and bias.

I wonder God forbid if any Lankan player would have died would Arjuna taken the responsibility of the player's death?

I also remember indian were furious and berating Sri Lanka because they wanted to play in Pakistan....

indian was going around the world -- telling nations to not travel to Pakistan, not play sports in Pakistan, not sell weapons to Pakistan

:disagree:

Sri Lankan’s likes to visit Pakistan; Even I am visiting Pakistan this year.

When Some Countries tried to divide Sri Lanka, Pakistan came to help Sri Lanka will always remember that.

you are always welcome to our land at anytime, as this is also your land.

Just avoid July/August!! That is my advice.

Despite of which Sri Lankans travel to Pakistan with their arrogance and paid the price.

Now they are stuck with IPL and regular series with India. That is how the SLCB will survive now. :pop:

I will arrive in Islamabad after visiting China for Shanghai Expo 2010

Swing by the Serena hotel for a good meal. It obviously goes without saying, make sure you go to Daman e Koh for breath-taking view of Margalla Hills and the whole Federal Capital.

and you can PM me if you need any favours of any kind. I have family in Isloo.

you see, that's the thing!!

They got attacked, and even then they said they would visit Pakistan again.

That shows you that they are true men --- and not a bunch of whiney wimps like other people.

They are also not naiive people, they also were having similar conflict in their country. In this case, Sri Lankans and Pakistanis collectively knew who really organized and funded this attack. I can assure you that.

the driver of the bus (Meher Mohammad Khalil ) with his quick thinking, managed to steer the vehicle out of danger despite a deluge of gunfire

Now they are stuck with IPL and regular series with India. That is how the SLCB will survive now. :pop:

they enjoy the game for what it is.....

not everything is about cash :azn:

Outside Sri Lankan Air Force HQ, along side the National flag and the Air Force detail, Pakistan National flag is displayed in a prominent place.

I, too, tend to agree with the view Asim expressed earlier...

Why does one country "warn" the cricket board of another country against travelling to a third country? Clearly, the BCCI nor the Indian government had any business interfering in the Sri Lankan tour of Pakistan. They wanted Sri Lanka to stay away and when their desire went unfulfilled, they resorted to other means.

The fact that the Lahore Police did not take appropriate *preventive* measure has to be accepted. But that in no way become a rationale or explanation for why the attack occurred in the first place.

Windjammer, you the man....thanks for posting yaar, great thread.

Daman e Koh is an interesting place for me.....I had my first dose of real "pan" there. The view is just breath-taking, and the air is nice and fresh.

Foreigners love that place too, though they are much fewer in number now (if any). I was last there in August and we had a great time

If you get in a fight with someone, do you go to the guy's tailor, or car-dealer, or mechanic, or his bloody charas dealer and tell them not to do business with him?

india's whole approach was by far the most immature diplomacy on the face of the entire planet

and in the end, it didn't even work!!

I seem to vaguely recall the indians half-heartedly "helping" with anti-LTTE campaign, and then telling Sri Lankans not to buy Pakistani weapons --which were sent in order to support offensive against the tigers

(once again, no 'cake'......Lankans didn't listen to them)

That was the period when this "government" was at odds with PML-N, they enforced governor rule, etc. etc.

The administration was totally misguided and unfocused on providing top-notch security to the team. Because, as usual with these people....this miserable lot.... -- they are busy bickering and fighting and worrying only about themselves.

It was not a failure of intelligence. Agencies warned them far in advance; the police did what they could, even though they were clearly out-gunned. The gunmen were well equipped and well trained. Luckily, they did not succeed with their ulterior motives. Allah SWT was kind.

old news....

Bus Driver Hailed 'Hero' in Lahore Attack
Lahore: Meher Mohammad Khalil , the bus driver who saved the lives of the Sri Lankan cricket team during Wednesday's terror attack is now considered a big hero in Pakistan.

Khalil kept his head cool and drove the bus to safety when it came under gun and grenade attack from terrorists.

Meher Mohammad Khalil says he did it for Pakistan. 'The thought that the Sri Lankans are guests and my country's image will be ruined if any of the players got seriously hurt spurred me,' he said. 'I kept my foot on the accelerator and drove the bus.'

Mr Khalil was behind the wheel when gunmen attacked the convoy bringing the Sri Lankan team to the stadium in Lahore on Tuesday. Eight people were killed, but none of the players suffered serious injury.

'It was shocking and then I heard Sri Lankan players shouting 'Go! Go!' and I did my best to take them to safety,' Mr Khalil told newsmen, from where his charges were dramatically airlifted to safety by the Pakistani air force. 'Had we stopped, a rocket launcher would have hit us,' the 42-year-old said. 'That could have been disastrous.'

Up to a dozen men - armed with grenades, a rocket launcher and automatic weapons - besieged the Sri Lankan team bus barely half a mile from the Gaddafi Stadium where they were due to start the third day's play in the second Test.

'The vehicle slowed at the roundabout when I saw two men come out of hiding and start shooting,' he said. 'There was continuous firing and then suddenly a man jumped in front of the bus and hurled a grenade towards us. But luckily it missed and I drove in between the security vehicles and safely took the bus to the stadium.'

Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene and manager Brendon Kuruppu were full of praise for the driver. 'I was on the phone from Sri Lanka when I saw men coming towards us and started firing. It could have been worse but all praise to the driver who kept his cool and drove us out of danger,' he said.

Jayawardene said Mr Khalil was the saviour. 'He did not think for his life. He was wise enough to keep driving and took us to the stadium. It could have been fatal,' the skipper said.

Spin maestro Muttiah Muralitharan said Mr Khalil was brilliant.

'I am standing in front of you just because of the driver,' said Muralitharan, who gave his Sri Lankan shirt to Mr Khalil as a thank you.
