Honestly, to be appointed a coach, a person should go through relevant courses and prior experience with clubs, U-19 teams, A teams.
I know they were cricketers but that doesn’t qualify one to become a coach.

Regarding Chief Selector, could they not find a person from the selection committee to replace to maintain some sort of continuity? Wahab’s appointment is a political one hence he won’t add any value.
