Pakistan joins criticism over US Golan Heights move
Turkey, Russia, China, Germany are already opposed to Washington’s most controversial move in recent years

KARACHI, Pakistan

Pakistan on Wednesday joined the growing chorus of criticism over a U.S. decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over occupied Golan Heights terming it “a serious blow to the rule of law and international norms".

“This decision represents a serious violation of UN Charter, international law and applicable UN Security Council Resolutions," Foreign Ministry spokesman Muhammad Faisal said in a statement.

"Pakistan shares the international outrage and is deeply concerned over the potentially grave repercussions of this decision for the region and beyond," the statement added.

Islamabad called upon the UN Security Council to take cognizance of the situation and take steps in accordance with the UN Charter.

Israel occupies roughly two-thirds of the wider Golan Heights as a de facto result of the conflict. It moved to formally annex the territory in 1981 -- an action unanimously rejected at the time by the UN Security Council.

Israel has long pushed Washington to recognize its claim over the territory it seized from Syria during the 1967 six-day war.

Turkey, Russia, China, Germany and others are already opposed to Washington’s most controversial move in recent years.

So we can return the favour, verbally atleast. It is not like we are going over there to attack Israel. China, the EU and most of the rest of the world took a stand against this US recognition of Golan hieghts.

We must understand that our opposotion to Israel is not to support some Arab country. Our stance is our own and in coherence with the ideology of Pakistan. I must urge u to remember Liaquat Ali Khan's reply to Israeli request for Pakistan to recognize it in return for billions of dollars, he said "Gentlemen, our souls are not for sale", so this opposition is for our souls, for our fealty and loyalty to Allah. This has nothing to do with supporting Arabs.

The only muslim nations with the guts to do this are Pakistan, Turkey and Iran, all the rest of them will not support us in such a venture. A more plausible model would be to encourage an Eastern UN which includes most of Asian, Middleeastern and African nations. If we make this about Islamic countries the options become too narrow. We must include powerhouses like Russia and China for an eastern UN to work. This has major positive points for authoritarian regimes like Russia and China to avoid UN human rights BS.
