Pakistan interested in buying T-50 trainer and 1500 HP engines from South Korea

Pakistan has a relationship with Lockheed Martin (via F-16) as well, so I imagine any request for T-50s on our end would get LM support in the U.S. Besides that, Pakistan may be able to tie a T-50 deal to other areas, e.g. Korean assistance in ECM/EW technology, armour technology, etc.

These r expensive trainers we can buy Yak from Russia too that doors is open too I guess the main replacement would be f7 t of No 2 sqd but it's based on F16 must say would be ideal for PAF training since front line Aircrafts r F16 and jf17

Sometimes there are Multiple deals with a country that is in our favour. First off, I would love to have more dealings with and acquire more ToT from South Korea like Turkey does. South Korea is as advanced as Western countries like US, UK, France and Germany in many fields and we would benefit immensely with such relationship to leap frog Technology.

South Korea is quite advanced in Shipbuilding and want to make a second Shipyard for Pakistan. I think we should take advantage of this offer.

Korea has shown keen interest in building the second shipyard in Pakistan.

Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain along with Additional Secretary Major General Raza Muhammad and Joint Secretary Air Commodore Farrukh visited South Korea on invitation extended by their defence minister.

Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain visited DAPA (defence production administration), SUSAN (the hub of defence production in Korea), Korean Aerospace Industry (KAI), Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) PONGSAN (ammunition building industry)where not only the new technologies were appreciated but both sides agreed to further enhance each other’s capabilities by helping through joint ventures. Both sides announced their interest in establishing mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of defence production. Both sides agreed to develop a plan of action for establishing military and technical cooperation between the two countries.

The Pakistani side invited the Korean defence minister to visit the 8th International Defence Exhibition & Seminar “IDEAS-2014”, 1-4 December 2014, Karachi, Pakistan.

The minister for defence has called for a project plan which will help look into the matter. The Koreans have expressed the desire to establish close ties with Pakistan. They have also called for technology sharing in the field of defence production. The minister also stressed the need of buying and selling of products so that better capabilities on both sides can be made use off.

Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain highlighted the strides Pakistan had made in the field of defence production and significantly talked about the ace aircraft JF-17 being built in Pakistan. He added that Pakistan was producing the best armament and heavy machinery. Our APCs are of B6 protection and are also developing B7 protection vehicles. These are low-cost and state-of-the-art equipment and Pakistan is proud of such developments. He said that Pakistan looks forward to exploring international markets and wants the world to support it in its endeavours. Pakistani Ambassador to Seoul arranged a book and handicrafts exhibition which the minister inaugurated.

Well I see it differently. After CPEC, China is equally reliant on Pakistan. Secondly, China is extremely serious about Pakistan's defence as well. Lastly, in wars, China has a very good track record of supporting Pakistan. I wouldn't over look these things easily, and go for a Korean platform with major US components.

Chinese are not selling candies....their equipment is not going to be cheap.....
Why Pakistan decided to wait on J-10C purchase? Chinese were asking for high price.

In Europe .. Italy and Spain are also our defence partners !

Italy provided Thetis FCS etc for AZ upgrade... Apart from griffo radars etc in the past .. And are offering Vixen AESA for JF.

Spain's Indra provided the EW suite for JF-17.

South Korea is also a partner - the. DCPM/BB ammunition and POF upgrade.. And now tank engines,T-50 and a shipyard in Gwadar.


South Africa helped us with H series SOMs.. And offered us stakes in the A-Darter missiles ...

Brazil supplies us with MAR series missiles.

I know car mechanics who can pump up Toyota Supras to a thousand HP in Karachi using their small workshops, but HIT can't make or upgrade an engine...
Sure there is a small difference between a Tank engine and a Car engine, but still?

Most of the world can't produce Tank engines producing engine is not a easy job it takes years and years to do it.

We need to stop buying and start manufacturing. The only way a T-50 deal would be acceptable is if local production & TOT was offered (especially TOT to manufacture a critical and sanction prone component: The Engine).

We should be able to save enough money for R&D If you can stop Nawaz Sharif from taking foreign trip for next 2 years.

Does Pakistan make car engine & transmission?

Pakistan has invested Zero in auto industry. Even Iran has a better Auto industry than Pakistan.
Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia are ahead of Pakistan in manufacturing cars and car parts.

Pakistan is currently considering the purchase of Korea’s T-50 lead-in fighter trainer to revamp its air fleet training program : says Defence Production Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain.

Defence Minister says we are also interesting in tank engines (1500hp).

PAF should go for:
150 T-50s
150 Platius Trainers

I'm sure Govt. has given green signals as privatization is on high heels right now.

PAF is buying this as JF-17 Dual seat might not have any role as AJT and most probably will not going to see any dual seat for JF-17s as it's a pilot friendly plane.

France I don't think any deal future since we retiring French Jets could be sub systems for JF17 .

This design also have some space for upgradation. But PAF can also demand ToT of L-15 LIFT from China. PAF has to decide whether to buy 50-60 L-15 or design a new LIFT aircraft. Facility at home will also provide some more opportunities in other fields of aircraft manufacturing. Our govt constructed a metro bus project in Lahore, less funds will be needed to procure L-15 fleet for training program as compared to that project.

L-15 are new and I think PAF is interested in T-50 since 2010 or even before. I am sure 100-150 will be a nice number.

T-50 is expensive to maintain as compared with yak-130 but if there is investment coming with t-50 than it is good option..

Yes that's what I am talking about on ALL Threats that there is a big investment for PAK Military that's why they are keen to buy expensive things.

If S. Korea will build a STX shipyard in Gwadar then it's a no-brainer. Forget the SU-35s. In the short term sure Russia will be a little let down, but it's not like Pakistan can buy squadrons of 35s.

S. Korea is a rising darling, there's possibly no way it can fu<k up, even if it does a Crimea over the couple of rocks it has a dispute over with Japan. The R&D potential & manufacturing are rising a highly educated workforce, variables are being introduced where S. Korean companies need to send their factories offshore, and if IF Pakistan can fix their electricity problem those factories will be shifted from China, Philippines, Thailand to Pakistan, because of the rising costs of doing business there.

S. Korea companies are usually holding companies that are vertically integrated, and have divisions that reach beyond their core business. STX is engaged in Shipbuilding, Energy, Construction, and many smaller divisions start a relationship with one and pretty soon you'll have the entire company.

I don't think so that SU-35 can come. May be IL-76 would be coming from Russia.

Regardless in the 21st century a $8 billion Defense budget is 'Peanuts', Pakistan's first priority is to improve their economy, unless it wants to end up like the Soviet Union.

There's more spillover if S. Korea turns their attention to Pakistan than the Russians. Russians, for now, are just selling their natural resources, theres not much behind their economic growth from the past few years. S. Korea has substance.

Tunning up a supra is much dufferent than producing a 1500hp tank for a tank.

Many countries despite having strong auto industries etc are still struggling to make tank engines and others engines aren't reliable ... Look at Turkey (getting one from EU for their Altay,Failed "Arjun",even merkava etc are using imported power plants...

Transmission is produced locally .. It was based on the one used in Lecrec..
