Pakistan Army suffering significant defections: daily

Salim,

I do agree with you that the "Loyalty to Islam above all else" attitudes, as indicated by some in this forum, are also reflected by people within the Army, and this may be contributing to somewhat higher desertions, but even such "misplaced" loyalty (IMO, so don't get upset folks) doesn't necessarily mean that those who possess it don't see the Taliban and AQ as a threat. A lot of people on this forum who do claim such loyalty are also vociferously against the Taliban and AQ, though a bit " Infidel conspiracy" oriented at times.:)

Loyalty to Islam is one aspect, but the other major problem (something that I think is even more important than the point about Islam) is the tribal linkages and connections. The "nafri" (manpower) for the FC is entirely from the tribal and these people simply do not want to get involved in what's becoming an increasingly tribal problem (Mehsuds vs. Wazirs etc.) and beyond that what they may perceive as an anti-Pashtun campaign. All these factors are bound to dampen the morale and will to fight.

The T 90 purchases have worried you?

The US military aid to Pakistan has not worried me or anyone else!

Well it did not worried you but it did to many in india when P.M Singh clearly showed his disappointment on pakistan getting the F-16s.

AM,

Right on the ball. Add to this the recent news about "Pakistani Army loses another fort" etc. and you get an idea as to how little most of the western press understands the structure of the Pakistani Armed Forces and the paramilitaries.

Well said. People must learn to differentiate between the Army and the F.C.

considering that the indians are preparing ground for a major offensive against the pakistanis within the next 12 to 18 months, this news; the 400 t-90 purchase; the minister walking into wagah; manmohan's statement that "indians are threatened by their neighbours' situation" is just part of the bigger picture - - tip of the iceberg rather- - - - its all building up slowly and nobody seems to get it

Its not good for you to live under Fear. Just forget about India launching an offensive against pakistan.

If India really wanted, we would have done it during the Kargil war. We have no interest to meddle with Pakistan, right now the topmost priority of India is - Development.

Never in wildest dreams!!! India will not attack Pakistan what will India gain from attacking Pakistan? Its more interested in Economy. India needs to be friendly towards Pakistan for its Economic success.

Rightly said.

Well it did not worried you but it did to many in india when P.M Singh clearly showed his disappointment on pakistan getting the F-16s.

Pakistans procurement of F-16s is definetly a concern, but not a cause for Alarm.

Lets get back to the topic on hand folks. Arms purchases by one country and the resulting concern for the other side can be discussed in the appropriate thread.

Thanks

Hi,

Here is a different approach to this issue---I am a firm believer that the pakistani govt has lost a lots of time to take care of the problem---4,5,6 years is a lot of time for the troops to start thinking about issues---inconclusive offensives against the extremists gives time to the troops to start questioning the motives of the superiors---indecision on the part of the generals gets the troops restless---to let a sore fester, leads to the damage of the muscle tissue, which may lead to further amputation of a body part. You cannot blame the FC or the army personale for defections at this stage of the conflict. It is unbelievable as to how much time and resource has been wasted. There have been some not so very bright people on Musharraf's cabinet and millitary advisors on the govt payroll---their inability to take the bull by its horn has done tremendous damage to the nation.

There are certain things that are---NOW ISSUES--something that needs to be taken care of today---NOW TASKS---something that needs to be completed today---NOW STRATEGY---something that needs to be analyzed on priority basis, the playing field and the game has changed, what is our strategy now to face and tackle the problems.

As much as we have wished for and paryed for, our problems have not gone away and they are not going away in the near future.
