Pak rejects B'desh's demand for apology over army's wrongdoings in 1971 war

Pakistan has turned down Bangladesh's demand for a formal apology over what Pakistan's troops did in the then East Pakistan during the 1971 war, making it loud and clear that both nations have to look forward to enhance bilateral ties rather than dwelling on the past.
According to sources, a Bangladeshi delegation headed by Foreign Secretary Mohammed Mijarul Quayes, which visited Islamabad [ Images ] last month, put foreign ministry officials in a state of disbelief by putting forth a number of controversial demands, The Nation reports.

"Before we could move ahead to enhance our bilateral relations, Bangladesh wants Pakistan to offer a formal apology against its army's wrongdoings during the 1971 war," diplomatic sources quoted Quayes, as saying, when the officials of two nations met in Isalmabad last month for their annual talks after a lapse of three years.

Elaborating his standpoint, the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary said that Dhaka believed that a formal Pakistani apology would be helpful in strengthening the bilateral ties.

The ministry of foreign affairs officials were again taken aback when the Bangladeshi side demanded the country's share of the four-billion-dollar worth of the pre-independence exchange, bank credit, and movable assets, which, according to the Bangladeshi side, were deposited or protected in west Pakistan during the 1971 war.

In addition to that, the visitors told the Pakistani side that Bangladesh also wanted the settlement of 200 million dollars, which Pakistan received from the international community as donation for the 1970 cyclone victims of the then east Pakistan.

However, Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir politely turned down their demand for an apology, and made it clear to them that Pakistan was willing to enhance bilateral ties with Bangladesh, and suggested them to move ahead by burying the past.

"We should explore the opportunities to enhance trade and bilateral ties rather than living in the past," Bashir said.

Sources privy to the meeting said that both Pakistan and Bangladesh were keen to reinvigorate the bilateral ties and suggested to their present leaderships to undertake bold steps to take the bilateral relations to a genuinely meaningful level, as both nations were "now being run by elected representatives".

that is sad part, but i think no country wants to present its bad face in international community by apologising for such acts.

As per Pakistan's textbooks, they did nothing wrong in 1971. Now how can they formally apologize? Won't the youth ask why textbooks are manufactured?

But what's wrong in returning the 200 m dollars that they formally owe to BD? It should not be a big deal for Pakistan. They will easily be able to get a loan waiver of 200 m anyway from some country after that.

.
i don't think it's right on the part of BD to demand for an apology from Pakistan for whatever has happened in the 70's. motive could only be to humiliate & make pakistan look evil. Not good. They should move on from here. However i don't see anything wrong in demanding the settlement of outstanding dues. if the revenue belongs to BD, they should pay up.

as we all know mushi done it before when he visit BD . but if they want we repeat it every 16th december then sorry dears . we are also a nation . akher izat bhi koi cheez hoti hai hum kisi ke baba ke noker nhi ke roz roz mafi mangy.

Thats is the wrong attitude ...if you are really sorry, then give a formal apology (not just some underhand apology, just to smoothen a state visit) once and move on..if you are not then stand by what you did..and if given a chance will do it again.

There are MORE war crimes and illegal killings on Mukti Bahini terrorists and Indian Army than Pakistan Army, History tells us, there is NO proof of mass rapes or killings of innocent people by Pakistan Army.

Bharati guys should also post threads about these figures..

100,000 people dead in Kashmir since 1989

107,262 children have become orphans. Nearly 23,000 women have been widowed and 116,333 civilians have been arrested till mid 2009.

Almost 10,000 rapes.

India should apologize for this and give Kashmiris right of self determination.

P.S : Aggression on other minorities and "untouchables" is not being mentioned yet.

. .
And who the heck are you tell us that??

If I am not mistaken isn't this an online forum, where people express their opinion on matters of world affairs..which do not concern them at all ?
I am just one of the thousands of poster, who expressed his feeling about a certain matter..is that not what we all do here?

Please read the thread on textbooks in the current affairs section- your argument is outdated.

Its like saying Pakistan should appologize to TTP for its wrong doings and US should appologize to Afghan Taliban for their wrong doings...... Mukhti Bahni was a terrorist organization which had support of Indian army. No one appologize for killing terrorists.

PLUS ITS NOT BANGLADESHIS WHO WANT AN APOLOGY. PAKISTANIS AND BANGLADESHIS MOVED FAR AHEAD OF 1971 ITS AWAMI LEAGUE WHO DONT HAVE ANY SOLID REASON OR AGENDA OF POLITICS THATS WHY STILL DOING POLITICS ON 1971 BASIS.

. . .
What about the terrorism done by Mukhti Bahni terrorists? They killed thousands of innocent West Pakistanis living in East Pakistan. Indian Army raped thousands in East Pakistan and now they are doing that in Indian Occupied Kashmir.

Then why has BD govt never asked for a formal apology from India? Anything better than stooge/munafiq/dalal theories? Even Khaleda Zia when she was in power never asked for an apology. And at least all the 'analysts' here consider her to be the ultimate patriotic PM of BD given her anti-india mentality.

See I wasn't wrong about manufactured textbooks.
