Pakistan navy test fires missiles, torpedoes
(AFP) – 7 hours ago

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan on Friday successfully test fired new missiles and torpedoes from ships, submarines and aircraft in the Arabian Sea, the navy announced.

"Pakistan navy fleet today tested its fire power in the north Arabian Sea to assess lethality, precision and efficacy of its weapon system," it said.

The navy did not disclose range or technical details but said "this included successful firing of a variety of missiles and torpedoes from the ships."

The tests included anti-surface missiles from an F-22P frigate, acquired recently from China, air-to-surface missiles from P-3C aircraft and sub surface-to-surface missiles from Agosta 90B submarines that originate from France.

"While reassuring Pakistan navy's commitment of defending the motherland, this strike capability would also send a message of deterrence to anyone harbouring nefarious designs against Pakistan," the statement said.

South Asian rivals India and Pakistan -- which have fought three wars, two of them over the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir -- routinely carry out missile tests since both demonstrated nuclear weapons capability in 1998.

Last month, India successfully tested a nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni-III missile with a range of more than 3,000 kilometres (2,000 miles) from Wheeler Island, off the coast of the eastern state of Orissa.

Pakistan's arsenal includes short-range, medium and long-range nuclear capable missiles.

"While (giving a reassurance about the) Pakistan Navy's commitment of defending the motherland, this strike capability would also send a message of deterrence to anyone harbouring nefarious designs against Pakistan," a naval statement said after the manoeuvres.

The manoeuvres were aimed at assessing the lethality, precision and efficacy of weapon systems, the statement said.

Warships, submarines and aircraft carried out the "successful firing of a variety of missiles and torpedoes".

Newly inducted weapon systems, including anti-surface missiles on Chinese-made F-22 P frigates and air-to-surface missiles of P3C maritime surveillance aircraft, were among those tested.

An important feature of the drill was the firing of sub-surface-to-surface missiles by Agosta 90B submarines.

"The target set was successfully engaged," the statement said.

Naval chief Admiral Noman Bashir, who witnessed the event, expressed satisfaction at the operational readiness of the Pakistan Navy fleet and commended officers and men for their commitment and professionalism.

The weapon firing zone, spread over hundreds of miles, was cleared of all merchant ships and fishing craft during a special operation to ensure the safe conduct of the drill.

The missiles fired included French-acquired SM 39, surface-to-surface missiles and AM 39 air launched version of the same missile.

The naval exercises come as Pakistan has reportedly recently acquired 120 Chinese C802 long-range anti-ship cruise missiles to counter Indian Navy's BrahMos missiles.

Congrats PN.... I am sure IN would be watching it very closely...Lets c what's the official response of GOI to it....

Query : I know as per agreement b/w india and Pak both needs to tell each other about any planned test of Ballistic missiles...Though there is no bonding on testing of cruise missiles....Are there any such obligations in naval versions????

Nops, cruse missiles don't up into the notification process.

Plus, this was a naval exercise and these were AShM, PN must be testing its 2 newly acquired surface combatants the F-22P frigates and with it live firing of some other equipment for training purposes.
