Mine was a contemporary response. If you think of it this way, you should also consider whether it is in the US interest to subdue the resistance and leave Afghanistan or to stay there indefinitely, on one pretext or the other.

Until he became the President, he was under the impression that the US was losing billions of dollars in the war in Afghanistan.......what changed Trump's hardheaded mind that he decided not only to continue the engagement but to enhance US presence in Afghanistan?
