After much effort India set up Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) with the Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUT). Now it wants to merge it with Central University of Tamil Nadu. CICT would become a department i that university that teaches everything from math to Hindi to Sanskrit. Now CICT would become one of those depaRTments.

Why are these Sanskrit Universities and Hindi Universities. First merge them with other universities. Then come for Tamil.

.
I couldn't understand you. What are you trying to say exactly?

After much effort from Tamil scholars and politicians, Indian gov funded the creation Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) several years ago. It is to research Tamil language and culture in the classical age (about 2000 years ago).

Now Indian gov is planning to merge it with (bring it under) Central Univ of Tamil Nadu. CICT will not have independent budget or independent decision making. It will be like a department. Like the Hindi department.

I am saying, if you merge CICT with a central university, do the same for the Hindi universities and Sanskrit universities. Why degrade the Tamil research institute but not Hindi and Sanskrit.

It again shows Hindi imperialism and Sanskrit imperialism.

Thanks for explaining but it's not gonna happen anyway.

Indians are sneaky, can and should never be trusted , remember how Nehru conned Anna to give up Tamilnadu's succession by giving false promises - autonomy and no Hindi Imposition on Tamils

The major driving force of the Anti-Hindi agitation was not the questioning of protecting Tamil, but questions of future of Tamils. Hindi as a suitable candidate for the official language of India after independence was first proposed by Motilal Nehru Report of 1928. An Official Language Commission appointed under the terms of the Constitution in 1955 to review the situation supported Hindi as the sole official language, although members from Bengal and Madras dissented in favour of English.[13] As of 1961 census, there were 1652 languages.[9][13] Hindi as official language was opposed stating two reasons; the first because numbers of people with knowledge on English language was fairly evenly spread and also that imposition of Hindi would give a major advantage in terms of job and educational possibilities to those who have Hindi as their mother tongue. In effect a Tamil who would desire to pursue into union civil service would have to learn three languages, Tamil, Hindi and English, which are members of three different language families and each written in a different script. Therefore a three-language formula proposed was seen as a great educational burden imposed on non-Hindi-speaking states. Nehru promised in 1959 that the interests of the non-Hindi speakers will be safeguarded and so did Lal Bahadur Shastri later, but those promises didn’t put the fears of non-Hindi speakers to rest.[13]

Nehru's Promise of Federal Government

13th December 1946, J Nehru, moved a resolution in the Constituent Assembly that "States shall possess and retain the status of autonomous units, together with residuary powers and exercise all powers and functions of government and administration, save and except such powers and functions as are vested in or assigned to the Union, or as are inherent or implied in the Union or resulting there from."

when the constitution was adopted in 1950 it was unitary not federal with power resting on majority Hindi politicians as Central government is dominated by Hindi politicians

Is this what you are basing all your statements on !!

Is this the premise of ' accession ' of Tamil Nadu ( whatever that may mean ) !!!

Seriously, some serious doubts exist. The State of Madras was never independent hence the question of accession did not arise. Moving a resolution does not imply its acceptance, that too before independence.

It is a fact that Congress controlled by Hindi-Gujarati politicos promised federalism and linguistic state in mid-1940s. Then as the British ;leaving date came closer and closer they reneged on both. It took a lot of blood shedding to get linguistic states although it was promised before British left.

@Rajaraja Chola What do you think of this move? If at all this news is real.

I for one know that there was a Central Institute of Classical Tamil University was being built up on a small land of some 5-6 acres near IT city.

My college bus travelled through that location for 4 years. From 2009-13, 4 years... what they did was levelled the land, and by end of 2013 they erected a wall around it.... Now 3 months back, I saw an arch and a small building inside it... I dont know if kids even study there... Now its non functional as far as I know...

Even watched Tamil news channel.. Not a word on CICT though... State govt is also not showing any interest.. No idea if true or no.. No news on it, yet

What is the interest in Tamil research among the population? NOT TAKING ANY POLITICS into account.

For example, interest in Sanskrit is limited, albeit growing (especially among Europeans lol).

Yes and no... Infact in past 2-3 years its rising on account of Tamil Identity nationalism. Even some of the Engineering friends have started doing part time Literature in Tamil.. But Tamil research is increasing in the field of advanced Astrology and Siddha medicine where mini revolution of sorts are taking place. Most of the Siddha palm leaf manuscripts were taken away by Germans in pre independence era. Rumour is that most of the formulation of European pharmaeuticals were stolen from Siddha leaflets.
Mostly Tamil people are engrossed in daily livelihoods. Its just a phase in younger generations, like how I considered myself a commie during my early college days..

Interest in Tamil is increasing in East Asia, Especially Korea and Japan. The head of International Association of Tamil Research (biggest Tamil research association) is a Japanese.
