^the soldiers really feel proud when they get the opportunity to meet face-to-face with Gen.Kiyani - they have full confidence in his strategy to beat the militants - morale of the armed forces has never been higher than now. the Leader is leading from the front.

how many times has the President, PM or the Defence Minister ventured to the front-lines to meet and motivate the troops fighting the Battle for the Soul of Pakistan ???

These ops are a strictly military affair and it seems that the civilian govt. is only paying "Lip-Service" but taking all the "Credit".

No matter how much they try to get the credit, people of pakistan know who really is doing the fight & deserves the credit.

President Sahib is busy in breaking the record for foreign tours set by Mushy Uncle, which he will do in one hell of a record time, as already he has broken the record of staying 100 days out of country in his one year at presidency having gone with 200-250+ people entourages.

While PM Sahib is busy in doing Aaaaaa Aaaaaaa Aaaaaaa & then bundle of lies :)

And as for Defence Minister, he is the guy who said PAF does not have the capability to shoot down drones or even detect them forgetting that PAF had shot down an Indian Drone of Israeli made around Lahore or that PAF does all of its AAM launches by targeting much much smaller drones then any Predator class drone. I guess more then half of our population won't even know our defence minister name.

This govt can be classified as one of the worst govt in the history of Pakistan, even worst then the leadership at the time of break-up of Pakistan into two.

Dear Muse:

""Pashtun society is about abiding by laws, not the lawless savages you suggest, motivated by revenge only -- they know full well that going against the law has consequences and these are sure"".

Which Laws are you talking about? Which law in the world prescribes collective punishment for tribes and demolition of the tribals homes through shelling or airstrikes?

On the question of sovereignty and "writ of the GoP", it is an obvious fact that we are not able to enforce the writ even in Islamabad.

If we have to be slaves, it is better for us to Opt for a US or NATO administrator to rule us like the good old days of the British Raj. The gora sahib is endowed with a higher sense of justice than our Kala sahibs pandering to their wishes in a stupid and rapacious manner.

""^the soldiers really feel proud when they get the opportunity to meet face-to-face with Gen.Kiyani - they have full confidence in his strategy to beat the militants - morale of the armed forces has never been higher than now. the Leader is leading from the front"".

With all the due respect to Kayani sahib and our beloved PA, our real leaders are Gen. MacChrystal, the CENTCOM commander and Mr. Holbrook. They have provided us the capacity (including drone strikes) and some paltry finances to break the back of extremist Taliban insurgents.

Let us not delude ourselves with the valor stories of leading from the front. President Zardari and PM Geelani are doing a pretty good job of keeping the "Tigers" in good humor.

Yes i am sure our colonial masters are itching to jump in themselves and save Pakistan from the TTP...give it a rest already...

PA is fighting for Pakistan and its people...Right now TTP is the biggest threat facing us...they openly claim responsibility for suicide attacks, carry the attacks and threaten this nation on a daily basis and you have the audacity to imply that PA is just doing what US wants us to do and not something which HAS to be done for Pakistan...

Sheer brilliant POV and maybe it is facilitated by the fact that you are away from it all and sitting comfy in UK, asking us Pakistanis to bend over to TTP just to piss US off...not realizing that TTP has to be eliminated for our nation to survive...
TTP has attacked Pakistan on all frontiers, economic, ideological, property, lives etc...what else is there to fight for and save?
Maybe you like the Hizb ut Tehrir folks so popular in UK do not give a damn about Pakistan but do not think that Pakistanis can ever give up on their country and watch their men, women and children be blasted to bits by TTP goons...
To us the Pak Fauj is fighting a most noble battle to save their countrymen...

Valor has to be appreciated but then again people like you would have us believe that we are a colonial army fighting for the Goras...a POV you have stuck to previously as well...you are the one who is delusional here and needs a reality check...

Poll finds over 50% tribesmen dissatisfied with life in FATA

By Akhtar Amin

PESHAWAR: Over 50 percent tribesmen from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) have expressed dissatisfaction with the life in FATA, 34 percent sought integration with NWFP, 23 percent preferred things as they are and 20 percent voiced a preference for a separate province, according to a poll conducted by Community Appraisal and Motivation Programme (CAMP) in September.

The poll was conducted under a project “Communities for Change, Laying the Grass Roots Foundation for Political Reforms in FATA” funded by the German embassy, Islamabad. The poll was an attempt to provide a better understanding of what local people want - allowing their views to influence the policy debate in Peshawar, Islamabad and overseas. The poll of 2,000 adults was conducted in seven tribal agencies and three Frontier Regions of FATA and it included 29.1 percent women.

In the poll, the tribesmen voiced for justice, education and health as the most important services and demanded that the government should provide these services on priority basis. CAMP Chief Executive Naveed Shinwari told Daily Times that FATA lies at the top of the global security agenda. He said Pakistan and international community are actively debating policy options to deal with FATA’s development, governance and security needs. “Poverty, difficult terrain, contested system of governance, cross-border tribal and ethnic connections with Afghanistan, Pashtun traditions and presence of militants create a set of overlapping challenges,” he added.

He said that the key finding of the poll is that over 50 percent tribesmen expressed dissatisfaction with the life in FATA.

On the status of FATA, 34 percent seek integration with NWFP, 23 percent preferred things as they are and 20 percent voiced a preference for a separate province. Over 50 percent want the Political Parties Act be extended to FATA. On terrorism and security issue, 36 percent tribesmen thought negotiating with militant groups was the best way forward, whereas only 15 percent saw the use of military force as a viable option. Nearly 60 percent saw Islamic teachings as against suicide bombings. The causes of suicide attacks were described as western influence 51 percent, unemployment 28 percent, ignorance 25 percent, lack of education 21 percent, and Al-Qaeda 13.3 percent. On human rights, a large proportion rejected practices which compromised women’s rights such as honour killing and forced marriages. Respondents ranked democracy and independent judiciary as important issues affecting human rights in Pakistan. Approximately 50 percent believed that Afghan refugees had negatively affected Pakistan’s economy and undermined its security while 75 percent wanted to see Afghan refugees return to their homeland. On foreign countries, while 60 percent tribesmen wanted to emigrate from Pakistan, views of the US and UK are negative and 45 percent of respondents wished for Pakistan to be more like Saudi Arabia.

Dear Al-Green:

"" you are away from it all and sitting comfy in UK, asking us Pakistanis to bend over to TTP just to piss US off...""

I have no love lost for the likes of Hezb Al Tahrir or their moronic notions of a "Caliphate". Living in the UK is not such a big crime; our most honorable General Musharraf is also enjoying a "cozy life" around here.

Being a Pakistani we all feel the same pain and the same passion about our beloved country. TTP destructive actions have torn our national cohesion and economic fabric, perhaps irrevocably. How did we end up in this situation? a brief chronologic analysis will reveal that this is owing to the unflinching commitment and resolve of PA to support the US / NATO operations in Afghanistan; and to fight a proxy war on their behalf on its own soil.

PA aims are pretty much noble, to rid the world of the threat of Mullah Raj and extremism. But this has precious little to do with the interests of Pakistan. Its part of a global struggle led by the USA. PA is one amongst a global entourage of allied nations contributing to this noble struggle; but happens to be paying a disproportionate price for it. For instance, how many British troops have been lost waging war against the likes of hezb al Tahrir in London, Birmingham or Manschester? How many extremists have been displaced from their homes in Belgium or Holland?

Ok.

Any alternatives?

Any 'viable' solutions from your side?

Let's start from the 'very start', not just from the point where we started sending these parasites to hell in large numbers.

‘NWFP blasts show Taliban’s ability to strike’

* Analysts say attacks a reminder of threat posed by group
* Time right for major offensive to eliminate Taliban

ISLAMABAD: The suicide blasts that rocked NWFP and FATA over the weekend signal the Taliban remain a threat despite intensified military operations and unmanned drone attacks targeting the group’s leaders, said analysts on Sunday.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a CIA missile strike in the northwest last month. While a new leader has been named, some have speculated the group may have lost some of its ability to stage attacks.

But former intelligence chief of the region Asad Munir said Saturday’s attacks were a reminder of the threat from the group.

“That area is a safe haven for the Al Qaeda and Taliban leadership and they don’t want to lose it,” Munir told AP. “Yesterday’s attacks were a show of strength, and indicated the potential threat from Taliban in those areas.”

The killing of Mehsud followed a largely successful army offensive in Swat against the Taliban, which to some extent had reassured Western governments of Pakistan’s ability and intent to fight the Taliban.

“In spite of the reverses they have suffered in Swat, and the death and arrest of some of their ringleaders, the Taliban have demonstrated tenacity and proven they are capable of sowing terror whenever and wherever they wish,” said a daily newspaper in its Sunday editorial. “Their command structure is still intact and their sources of funding and arms remain virtually unscathed.”

A senior Peshawar police officer said Saturday’s bombings were in response to government pressure. “The security forces’ offensive against the Taliban is on, and in desperation, they are now targeting innocent citizens,” said Liaquat Ali Khan.

Munir said with the recent killing of the Taliban chief, it was an opportune moment for the military to launch a major offensive in the northwest to eliminate the group.

“This is the right time for a comprehensive and detailed operation in Waziristan and adjoining areas, as they are still in disarray after the death of Baitullah. I think the army is determined to do it in October,” he said.

Targets in North and South Waziristan have been hit by Pakistani airstrikes, but the military is yet to launch a major ground offensive there. The government has said it would begin army operations in the region at an “appropriate” time.

Dear Xeric:

There are a number of viable alternatives to what we are doing to our national fabric. The options are listed as follows:

1. Pakistan Government and Military leadership should commit to Pakistan’s interest and formally disown the so-called Global War against Terror. The US should be told in no uncertain terms that we are under no obligation to support their occupation of Afghanistan and to offer logistics support or to block the infiltration of militants.
2. PAF should be tasked with active defense against drone attacks on Pakistani soil. Drone base in Shamsi AFB to be closed with immediate effect.
3. Pakistan should express its readiness to support US / NATO, but at a reasonable price, not FEE SABILILLAH like now.
4. It the US / NATO wishes to continue engagement of Pakistan Army in flank support operations and logistics they will have to pay the right price for that. Instead of the paltry US$ 1.5 b / year; they will have to allocate at least 15% of their outlays on the Afghan campaign as economic stabilization aid to Pakistan.
5. For the lack of a viable alternate US / NATO will most probably opt for the enhanced aid solution. Other routes through Russia / Central Asia are an order of magnitude more expensive. At least 40% of the aid (almost US$ 6-8 b / year) should be allocated to develop the economy and infrastructure in FATA, Swat, Bajaur. This should essentially dissolve any militant tendencies within about 2 years or less. Let the people from these areas enjoy a quality of life that they cannot even dream of. When people have something to lose, they tend to behave. This will also help curb the infiltration in Afghanistan.
6. Currently about 40% of our Revenues are wasted in Debt servicing (paying for the past sins). A substantial inflow and debt write-offs will free the requisite resources to develop Pakistan’s economy, infrastructure and social services. Our outlays on education and health, now hovering at paltry 3% will most likely shoot up to about 15%.

Historically, being an American ally has been a passport to prosperity. In our case however we have been left CHOOPO GUNNEY (sucking on sugar canes). The problem all along has been that the US found it cheaper to bribe or make deals with our political / military leadership than do make serious investment in Pakistan.

The above route is fraught with some risks; the US instinctive reaction will be to ratchet up the pressure on our leadership and hurt their vested interests. India too will be pumped up to exert pressure on the Eastern border from which they have been restrained by the US so far. But this is where Pakistan Army has to play its role as the protector of National integrity.
