What's new

One example - why I believed strongly in a secular India.

I say just unban polygamy (allow both polyandry and polygyny) for all.
I think we at least need stricter regulations on polygamy, I know some who have been bought up in polygamous families - many of them are not happy with the relaxed laws around it.

Most of the fathers of my Hindu friends growing up had a "rakhel" on the side. So much for the attention on polygamy.

@Shantanu_Left would have some fine words to share on this.

BJP/RSS has only now taken up power 1.5 terms- So what happened to nearly/more than half of Indian before that (65 Plus years-Non RSS aligned governence).

Lets wait for the next cycle of elections- More than half of Indians will vote this bigot-GOI out. You will get your chance to relick left-right- left for another 60 plus years.
The real question is what happened in those 65 plus years, so much that we ended up with Hindu Nationalists. How they got here from being zero to 272+ twice. You can live in the future sulking over thoughts of defeating them, or ask RaGa to take more pleasure trips to Pattaya so that he gain his 'momentum' back. Then come back to being the same RSS - Modi - Nazi - ISIS. Repeat...

Correct-Thats the right approach- Prosperity and promise of wealth and economic stability is what happened-The promise made is being broken and the 2nd term with absolute majority its being misused- The people will change that. UCC is the way to go in my opinion...Our type of democracy is evolving - before it gets better it will get worse-Lets wait and watch.

What you are saying is separation of church and state in European context. It is different in the Indian context.

BTW was India secular from 1950-1975? I hope you know that the word secular was inserted by Indira Gandhi during emergency when the opposition was in jail.

Separation of Church and state in the West is separation of Temples/Masjids/Churches etc from state in India. It is still the same.

Yes. I know it was added and I am glad she did though I do not like the way it was done.

Next you will say let's unban rape and murder

Common. Now you are arguing for the sake of arguing. You can do better.

Why is Polygamy an issue? Again it is the state allowing it not forcing it.

Even most Muslims do not practice this even though it is permitted.

At least we will not have people like Dharmendra who had to convert to Islam to marry Hema.

Polygamy was allowed all through history in Hinduism until British imposed this restriction on Hindus and we are still stuck with this nonsense even after independence.

I still do not get what is the issue with Polygamy. If the consenting adults who will be in the relationship do not have a problem, government simply has no business to object it.

Same laws for all people irrespective of religion is the very definition of secularism. The very fact that none of the "secular" Parties want it shows their fake secular credentials.

Haj, payment of salaries to imams, minority institutions not being under RTE, The non application of UCC, among others

Exactly, that is why I called it Pseudo Secularism meaning false secularism.

I am not interested in politics here and do not want to get digressed from the topic at hand. We should focus on the proposed policy only.

Yes. I agree a secular government has NO business in running places of worship or funding or subsidizing any activities related to religion.

All laws and policies should be indifferent to the religion of the citizen

India is secular because of Hinduism. Why don't other minorities like sikhs, jains, Buddhist or even micro minority like Parsees have any problems. In fact Parsees are the most developed community even if they are barely a few lakhs.

Great. Let's keep that tradition alive and ensure that Muslims too have no issues living and prospering along side majority Hindus.

We being the majority community should act with a big heart and embrace all minorities around us.

Let's not get ourselves become slaves to the history and get stuck in the web of blame game.

We cannot and should not hold current generation Muslims accountable to the acts committed by the Muslim rulers of the past.

It is the responsibility of this generation to deliver peace and prosperity to the next generation. We owe it and that should be our primary focus.

Lol- My grandfather was one of them-(The common excuse given was -I have the means to support more than one woman and that was a sign of Machoism)

That is typically the case. It was a symbol of wealth, and utilized only by those that could afford.

Islamic provisions on polygamy offer a title and share of the wealth/inheritance, something that extra-marital relations do not.

True. But it not limited to Hindus alone. Even Muslims and others have them.

Also, what about Husbands wasting precious little money available on tobacco, liquor, prostitutes and gambling instead of on the wife and kids?

There are many such social issues which government does not want to address.

Heck Government does not even want to talk about banning liquor or tobacco as it is a big revenue generator. This is why I am a big fan of Nitish Kumar.

Liquor shops have exemptions from the government during lockdown. Talk about misplaced priorities.

I think we at least need stricter regulations on polygamy, I know some who have been bought up in polygamous families - many of them are not happy with the relaxed laws around it.

What we need is proper education, human rights and people taking responsibilities.

Government cannot and should not take the responsibility of the citizens.

Lol! That's an eventuality. People strive for success, the government is supposed to facilitate it. I think the governments for the first 50 years did too little and the icing on cake Indira did more damage to our nation than the good things she did. When countries like China was rapidly expanding it's the industrial base, India was busy nationalizing our industries. You can live in those times, sorry not interested.

Lol- Funny a Man has multiple partners are seen as wealthy and symbol of prosperity- Whereas a woman with multiple partners is a slut!

Its the congress that opened up the economy as well-No- Better late than never. What has this present GOv done for prosperity other than shrink the economy?

But a woman can claim divorce and demand a chunk of property on the basis of extramarital affair(s).

Current personal laws have no such clause.

Its not that simple my friend. I grew up in those times.

It is not for we trying. Both Nehru and Indira did try but for the US, Pakistan was more important than India in the 1960s due to SEATO and CENTO pacts to stop the spread of communism while China was more important in the 1970s as China was ready to back stab the Soviets and partner with the US instead.

Indira came empty handed when she went begging for food grains as we were going through great famine.

The whole Jayaprakash Narayan movement was black & white (sorry! no color in those days) revolution sponsored by the foreign powers to teach India a lesson.

Indira had no option but to nationalize the assets to get the sharks out and secure the country.

Nehru should have never gotten us into the USSR/Non-alignment camp in the first place. West camp was always more beneficial.

Great point. Could not have said it better.

Yeah! but West did not need India against USSR as we did not have a border with the USSR. Only Iran and Pakistan were needed and they were made part of SEATO and CENTO.

They only needed India against China and we know how West greatly helped India in defeating and destroying China during that war. We owe it to them for that great help.
